Chapter 2 - The Second SafeThe person coming downstairs was Tyler Bennett.

Vanessa’s twenty-three-year-old son from her first marriage.
He froze when he saw me.
Still in uniform.
Grandma wrapped in Rosa’s blanket.
Marcus standing near the office door.
Tyler’s face drained.
“You weren’t supposed to be home until next month.”
Silence.
I closed my fingers around the brass key.
“So you knew my deployment schedule.”
Vanessa snapped:
“Tyler, upstairs.”
Too late.
He had already told me more than he intended.
Marcus looked at me.
“Your father installed another safe.”
Vanessa turned.
“No, he didn’t.”
Marcus ignored her.
“He never trusted one.”
Grandma lifted one trembling finger.
“Third shelf.”
Her voice was weak.
“Behind Lincoln.”
I found the heavy biography.
Pulled it out.
Behind it—
a brass keyhole.
The key fit.
Click.
The entire bookshelf shifted forward.
Vanessa screamed:
“No!”
Marcus stepped between her and me.
Behind the shelves stood a narrow steel door.
Inside was another vault.
Untouched.
Three hard drives.
Several sealed envelopes.
A leather journal.
One large package.
FOR CLAIRE — OPEN ONLY IF I AM GONE.
My hands began shaking.
I opened it.
The first page was a letter.
Claire,
If you are reading this, then I was not allowed to tell you the truth myself.
I had to stop.
My father’s handwriting.
Real this time.
I continued.
If Vanessa controls this house, do not believe a single tear she sheds.
Vanessa moved toward me.
“That’s fake.”
Marcus blocked her.
I read further.
Everything is documented.
Every unauthorized transfer.
Every forged signature.
Every attempt to isolate your grandmother.
If anything happens to me, give everything to Detective Samuel Brooks.
Marcus whispered:
“He knew.”
The package contained financial records.
Audio files.
A flash drive.
A copy of a life-insurance policy.
Value:
$28 million.
Beneficiary:
Claire Whitmore.
Not Vanessa.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Your father was confused near the end.”
Grandma looked at her.
“No.”
Her voice strengthened.
“Your marriage was.”
Everyone turned.
“What does that mean?” I asked.
Grandma stared at Vanessa.
“My son was going to divorce her.”
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
Grandma continued.
“He discovered what she was doing.”
“What?”
“Taking money from Whitmore Industries.”
Vanessa shouted:
“You don’t know what you’re talking about!”
Grandma almost smiled.
“I know enough.”
We opened the first hard drive.
Company transfers.
Consulting payments.
Luxury real estate.
Payments to Tyler’s private business.
Millions moved through shell companies.
Then I found a folder:
MEDICAL
My father’s prescription records.
Private doctor emails.
Blood tests.
One note:
DIGOXIN LEVEL ELEVATED — REPEAT TEST IMMEDIATELY.
I stared.
“What is digoxin?”
Marcus answered quietly.
“A heart medication.”
Dad had heart disease.
That wasn’t surprising.
Then I read the dose.
And a handwritten note from Dad:
Medication bottle changed after Vanessa began managing pills.
My blood went cold.
I looked at her.
Vanessa stepped backward.
Before anyone could speak—
the front door opened.
Two detectives entered.
Between them walked a man in a gray suit.
Detective Samuel Brooks.
He looked directly at me.
“You must be Claire.”
“Yes.”
“My father left something for you.”
Brooks looked toward the hidden safe.
May you like
Then Vanessa.
“We’ve been waiting for this room to open.”
