Chapter 8 - The Trial of Victoria Vance

The trial began on a brisk morning in March at the Hennepin County Courthouse. The courtroom was packed to capacity with journalists, legal observers, and members of the public who had followed the case.

Victoria Vance sat at the defense table dressed in dark blue silk, flanked by three defense lawyers. She maintained an air of regal indifference, pretending to read legal briefs while ignoring the cameras.

The prosecution’s case was relentless.

First took the stand Dr. Aris Thorne, who presented the forensic medical evidence with terrifying clarity. He projected high-definition photos of Elena’s bruised ribs and welts onto a large screen in front of the jury. Members of the jury gasped; two turned their heads away in horror.

Next was the social worker, Sandra, who read the transcript of Elena’s initial interview. Her soft, unvarnished recital of a six-year-old’s words—"Grandma said the black bag was a magic suit that washes away bad food"—brought several jurors to tears.

Then, the prosecution called Julian Vance to the stand.

The courtroom fell dead silent as Julian took the oath. He sat in the witness chair, looking directly at the jury, refusing to look at his mother.

For two hours, the prosecutor guided Julian through his testimony. He detailed his own childhood of torture under Victoria’s roof, the psychological terror she exerted over his adult life, and finally, the conversation he had with her after the incident.

"Did your mother ever express remorse for what she did to Elena?" the prosecutor asked.

"Never," Julian replied, his voice strong and clear. "She told me that Elena was 'weak' and 'fat,' and that she was doing what was necessary to preserve the family name."

During cross-examination, Sterling tried to discredit Julian, accusing him of betraying his mother to secure sole control of the family estate.

Julian leaned toward the microphone, his expression resolute. "Mr. Sterling, three weeks ago, I signed a legal deed permanently renouncing my entire inheritance from the Vance family trust. Every penny of that money has been redirected to a charitable foundation for survivors of childhood domestic abuse. I don't want her money. I want my daughter to be safe."

Sterling sat down, completely outmaneuvered.

Finally, the state played the audio recording I had captured on my phone on December 27th. Victoria’s cold, crisp voice filled the courtroom, echoing off the mahogany walls:

“Your daughter needs to learn how to control her body before it’s too late!... A few taps with the leather ruler from my sewing room to enforce proper posture... If you had an ounce of discipline, you’d be thanking me instead of standing in my living room throwing a hysterical fit.”

The defense did not call Victoria to the stand. Sterling knew that five minutes under cross-examination would result in a total meltdown that would seal her fate.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.

When the courtroom was recalled, the jury foreperson stood up.

"On the count of First-Degree Aggravated Child Abuse, how do you find the defendant, Victoria Elizabeth Vance?"

"Guilty."

"On the count of Child Endangerment, how do you find the defendant?"

"Guilty."

Victoria’s face turned white as a sheet. Her regal mask finally shattered. She grabbed Sterling’s sleeve, her fingers clawing at his suit jacket. "Do something! You promised me I wouldn't go to jail! Fix this!"

Judge Henderson, a stern woman with decades on the bench, looked down at Victoria with utter disgust.

"Victoria Vance, your conduct was not only criminal; it was a demonic perversion of maternal duty," Judge Henderson declared. "You used your wealth and status to terrorize an innocent child, just as you terrorized your own son decades ago. You believe you are above the law. You are not."

The judge slammed her gavel down. "I sentence you to twelve years at the Minnesota Correctional Facility for Women, without the possibility of parole for eight years. Bail is revoked immediately. Remand the defendant into custody."

Two bailiffs stepped forward, snapped handcuffs onto Victoria's wrists, and led her toward the side door. As she was dragged out, Victoria looked back at Julian and me, screaming obscenities, her hair falling out of its neat bun, completely unraveled.

Julian didn't look back. He took my hand, pulled me close, and breathed a long, deep sigh of release. The nightmare was finally over.
