Chapter 1 - The Plastic Shroud

“Your daughter needs to learn how to control her body before it’s too late!” my mother-in-law snapped at me, as if she were talking about a grown woman instead of a six-year-old child.

I heard that sentence later, though. Before I drove to her house, before I slipped my phone into my coat pocket with the voice recorder running, before I discovered just how far Victoria was willing to go when she believed no one would ever stand up to her, my daughter, Elena, walked into our bedroom, closed the door behind her, and whispered:

“Mom, promise you won't get mad at me.”

It was December 27th. In our suburban home, the Christmas lights were still twinkling and gift boxes remained stacked beneath the tree. My husband, Julian, and I had worked long shifts all day, so Victoria had offered to watch Elena. I had hesitated.

Months earlier, I had asked her to stop making comments about how much Elena ate, whether she asked for seconds on dessert, or if she was “getting a little chubby.” Victoria had simply laughed and said I was being overly sensitive.

Even so, we had given her one last chance.

When Elena came home that afternoon, she didn't run to show me the crafts she had made. She walked stiffly, her arms pinned tightly to her sides. She said she was tired and immediately went into her bedroom.

I followed her.

Elena lifted her red sweater.

Beneath her t-shirt, she was wearing a black heavy-duty trash bag that had been cut into a makeshift garment—a hole for her head and two for her arms. The plastic was stuck to her skin with sweat. As I gently peeled it away, I saw red, chafed skin around her shoulders and waist.

Then she raised her arm, revealing severe bruising along her ribs. Across her lower back were several straight, dark red welts—far too uniform to have been caused by a fall.

“Who put this on you?” I asked, my blood running cold.

“Grandma,” Elena whispered.

“Why?”

Elena swallowed hard. “Because I ate cookies. She said I had to sweat them out so I wouldn't get fat.”

I felt something inside me shatter...
