Chapter 9 - The Other Betrayal
Ruth’s letter did not accuse Grant of an affair.
That would have been easier.
Instead, she wrote that he had used my name to purchase a life-insurance policy on himself, naming Lenora as beneficiary and me as the insured spouse.
“That policy is illegal if you didn’t consent,” Priya said.
“I signed a medical questionnaire once.”
“Not the application.”
The application bore my forged signature and listed a terminal illness I did not have.
The policy had been denied after a physician questioned the records. Grant had then moved to the house plan: incapacitate me, secure a power of attorney, borrow against Briar Hollow, and let his business debts swallow the property before anyone could challenge him.
The crash had been a rehearsal.
The garage had been the final step.
I read the letter again until the words blurred.
Ruth had known. Priya had known. Grant had known.
I had been the only person in my marriage who did not know what was happening.
“I feel stupid,” I said.
Priya’s voice softened. “You were deceived. That is not the same thing.”
“I defended him.”
“Because he trained you to.”
That night, I moved into a private room at the rehabilitation center. I changed the locks on every account, canceled the joint credit cards, and sent Grant a formal notice through counsel.
At 2:13 a.m., the room phone rang.
I answered without speaking.
“You’re making a mistake,” Grant said.
“You are violating the order.”
“I’m trying to save you from your own lawyer.”
“You tried to sell my home.”
“I tried to save our family.”
“You have no family left here.”
He breathed into the receiver.
“Ask your mother why she really left.”
The line went dead.
My mother had died when I was six. Ruth had raised me and never discussed the circumstances beyond saying that my mother “needed a life she could not build in Briar Hollow.”
I called Priya.
“Did Ruth leave anything about my mother?”

“Yes,” Priya said. “But I hoped you would never need it.”
