Chapter 4 - The Recording

Priya called the police while I listened to the silence on the line.

When officers traced the number, Lenora had already discarded the phone. But her message had done what she intended: it made me understand that the garage was not merely a hiding place. It was a vault.

I returned to Briar Hollow under police escort that afternoon.

The house looked unchanged from the street, which was almost worse. A delivery truck idled beside the hedge. Wind moved through the bare sycamores. Anyone passing would have seen an ordinary home.

Inside, my bedroom had been emptied.

My clothing hung in garbage bags. Ruth’s jewelry box was missing. Grant’s suitcases sat beside my bed, and Lenora had placed a framed photograph of herself on the dresser.

“She’s claiming residency,” Priya said.

“She has been here for one day.”

“That has never stopped anyone determined to create a story.”

In the garage, Jonah handed me the leaf key.

The key fit a small brass plate in the concrete beneath the workbench. A hidden latch released a square of floor barely large enough for my hand.

Inside was a tin box wrapped in oilcloth.

Ruth’s handwriting covered the lid.

FOR CAMILLE. OPEN ONLY IF THEY COME FOR THE HOUSE.

My hands shook as I lifted it.

There was a cassette recorder, three labeled tapes, a ledger, and a sealed envelope bearing the Arden family seal.

Priya read the first page of the ledger. “These are payments.”

“To Grant?”

“To a company called Ellery Strategic.”

Jonah inserted the first tape into the recorder.

Ruth’s voice filled the garage, older and rougher than I remembered.

“Camille, if you are hearing this, someone has tried to take Briar Hollow through fraud. The person closest to you may be involved. Do not confront him without witnesses.”

I closed my eyes.

The tape continued.

“Grant Ellery approached me about refinancing the house. I refused. He later presented documents claiming Camille had granted him authority. The signatures were false. I hired an investigator named Elias Ward, and he found that Grant has been moving money through a shell company controlled by his mother.”

Priya looked at me. “How long did she know?”

“Apparently years.”

Ruth’s voice softened. “I did not tell Camille because she was in love, and love can make a warning sound like an insult. If Grant ever becomes desperate, he will use kindness as a weapon and urgency as a cage.”

The final words on the tape were almost a whisper.

“The proof is not all in this box. Elias hid the original documents where Grant would never search. Follow the blue line.”

The tape clicked off.

Jonah turned toward the garage wall.

Behind a row of tools, someone had painted a thin blue mark leading toward the concrete floor.

And freshly scratched beside it were two words.

HE KNOWS.
