Chapter 8 - The Wrong Story

Marcus read the messages twice before showing them to Priya. They had arrived on a phone used only for the investigation, a number that had never been shared with Natalie or Theo.

“The sender knows about your return,” Priya said.

“Only three people know.”

“You, Daniel, and his commanding officer.”

Marcus’s face hardened. “The commander did not leak it.”

“No. But someone may have accessed the leave paperwork.”

They reported the messages and preserved the device. Priya advised Marcus to stop visiting the house and move every meeting to public places. For the first time since Daniel had called, Marcus seemed less like a man solving a problem and more like a man realizing the problem had been watching him.

Daniel boarded the transport aircraft two days later. During the flight, he tried to sleep but kept hearing Emily’s voice.

The gray truck man knows my name.

He had assumed the men came because Natalie invited them. He had assumed their presence was evidence of an affair. Now he understood that some had come because the Carter family was a target on a list.

That did not erase Owen. It did not erase the betrayal. It simply meant the first story had been incomplete.

When Daniel landed at the military hub, Priya sent him a new file. It was security footage from the night the silver-haired man entered the house. Marcus had obtained it lawfully from a neighbor after the police requested the recording.

The man was not carrying a briefcase. He was carrying a camera.

He entered through the basement window, placed the recording device beneath the dining table, and went upstairs. Twenty-two minutes later, he returned with the file boxes.

“Do we know who he is?” Daniel asked.

“Eli Danner,” Priya said. “Former investigator for a private compliance firm.”

“What does that mean?”

“He is not listed as an employee of Hearthstone, but he has been paid by Blue Orchard.”

“So he stole the documents.”

“Yes. But there is more.”

The footage continued. Eli had not left immediately. He had gone back inside. A few minutes later, Natalie appeared at the basement door. She handed him a manila envelope.

Daniel felt the old anger rise again.

“What was in the envelope?”

“We do not know.”

“Ask Natalie.”

Priya hesitated. “She says she gave him copies of documents, but she believed he was helping her expose Owen.”

“She gave evidence to the man stealing evidence?”

“She says she did not know he worked for Blue Orchard.”

Daniel stared out of the aircraft window at the clouds below. Natalie had been deceived, but she had also chosen secrecy repeatedly. She had not merely been dragged into a crime. She had kept opening doors.

At the second airport, Marcus called.

“Theo is missing.”

“When?”

“He left the diner before police could question him.”

“Did he take the list?”

“No. But someone broke into his apartment.”

“What was taken?”

“His laptop. And a photograph of his daughter.”

Marcus’s voice cracked on the last word. Daniel remembered then that Marcus had a life beyond being useful. A sister, a niece, a brother he had spent years trying to rescue from bad choices. His loyalty was not a machine. It had limits.

“Are you still with me?” Daniel asked.

“I don’t know.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means I told myself Theo was just a source. He is my brother. If they have his daughter, I cannot pretend this is only about your house.”

Daniel said nothing for a moment.

“Then do not pretend,” he said. “Tell the truth to the people who can protect her.”

Marcus breathed out slowly.

“You sound different.”

“I’m tired of being calm for people who use it as permission.”

When Daniel reached the last military terminal, Natalie sent him an audio file. It lasted thirty-one seconds.

Owen Vale’s voice filled the recording.

“You should have taken the deal, Natalie. The husband comes home, the house goes quietly, and everyone walks away.”

Then Natalie’s voice answered.

“You said no one would know about Daniel.”

Owen laughed.

“I said he would be too far away to matter.”

The recording ended.

Daniel played it again. The first evidence of the affair had not been the whole truth. Owen had never intended to protect Natalie. He had intended to use her until the house was gone.

But one question remained.

Who had recorded the conversation?
