For thirty-seven seconds, no one knew where Evan was. His teacher believed he had gone to the restroom. The counselor believed he had gone to the library. The school camera showed him leaving through a side door with a man wearing a blue maintenance uniform.

Daniel felt every instinct demand movement.

Priya grabbed his arm. “We do this through the police.”

“That is my son.”

“And if you rush in blind, you may lead them to Emily.”

The school went into emergency protocol. Officers blocked the exits. Federal investigators traced the school’s visitor log and found that the man had used a stolen badge.

Evan was found in the music room, sitting beneath a piano. He had not left the building. He had seen the man in the hallway, understood that the blue uniform was wrong, and hidden instead of following him.

When Daniel reached him, Evan stood with tears on his cheeks.

“I remembered the safe word,” he said.

Daniel had forgotten teaching it to him. After Emily’s first message, he had called the children and created a simple rule: if someone claimed to be picking them up and did not know the phrase blue door, they should go to an adult they trusted.

Daniel knelt and pulled Evan close.

“You did exactly right.”

“I was scared.”

Claire Voss was arrested at the coffee shop after agreeing to cooperate. She claimed Arden had threatened her too, but investigators found messages showing Claire had recruited at least nine spouses.

“She will say she was trapped,” Natalie said.

“Maybe she was,” Priya replied. “That does not remove her choices.”

The sentence stayed with Natalie.

That evening, Natalie went to the house alone with an investigator. She wanted to retrieve one item from the upstairs closet.

The name was written beside the words first contact and original account.

“Mara Bell is Nora Bell’s daughter,” Priya said after checking the records. “She works at Northstar.”

The stolen identity had not been random. Mara had used her mother’s documents to open the account, and the account had received Evan’s money.

Mara was arrested that night. She immediately offered to testify against Arden.

“She says Arden designed the entire Carter operation,” the investigator told them. “Owen was supposed to seduce Natalie, pressure her, and make her sign the first loan. Once the larger loan was created, Arden would use the forged power of attorney to take the house.”

Daniel looked at Natalie.

“They planned the affair?”

“They planned access,” Natalie said. “Owen chose what to do with it.”

The distinction mattered to the prosecution. It did not matter to the marriage.

The emergency foreclosure hearing was moved to the next morning. Arden remained in custody, but her attorneys argued that the recorded documents were valid until formally overturned.

Priya had one last problem. The original forged power of attorney was missing. Without it, the defense could claim the digital copies were incomplete.
