Chapter 8 - The First Day of School

The morning of September 1st arrived with a crisp, invigorating breeze that whispered of approaching autumn. The sky was a brilliant, cloudless sapphire, and the maple trees along the driveway were just beginning to tip their leaves with gold.
In Clara’s bedroom, the atmosphere was a mix of nervous excitement and joyful anticipation.
Arthur stood by the doorway, holding a professional camera like a proud father at a graduation, while Sarah knelt on the floor, meticulously buttoning up Clara’s crisp navy-blue school blazer and straightening her plaid pleated skirt.
“There,” Sarah smiled, brushing a speck of dust off Clara’s lapel. “You look like a true scholar.”
Clara spun around in front of the full-length mirror, her shiny black loafers clicking against the hardwood floor. She slung her brand-new pink unicorn backpack over her shoulders, adjusting the straps with a look of fierce determination.
“Do I look ready, Aunt Sarah?” Clara asked, her eyes shining with excitement.
“You look more than ready,” Arthur chimed in, stepping forward and handing her a small, beautifully wrapped box tied with a silver ribbon. “Open this before you leave, my princess.”
Clara carefully untied the ribbon and lifted the lid. Inside rested a delicate, silver locket engraved with a tiny star and the initials E.V.
“Your mother wore something very similar when she was your age,” Arthur said softly, his voice trembling slightly with emotion as he gently fastened the necklace around Clara’s neck. “Whenever you feel nervous at school, just touch this star. Know that your mother, and all of us here, are holding your hand every step of the way.”
Clara touched the cool silver star against her chest, a radiant smile breaking across her face. She threw her arms around Arthur’s neck, burying her face in his suit jacket.
“Thank you, Grandpa. Thank you for everything.”
“Come on, young lady, or we’ll miss the school bus!” Sarah called out, checking her watch with an affectionate grin.
The chauffeured black sedan was waiting at the front doors, but today, Arthur and Sarah decided to walk Clara down the grand driveway to the neighborhood bus stop, where several other children and parents were already gathered.
As the yellow school bus rumbled down the street, its flashing amber lights signaling a safe stop, Clara turned back one last time to wave at Arthur and Sarah.

“Have a wonderful day, Clara! Make lots of friends!” Sarah shouted, waving vigorously.
Clara gave a bright, enthusiastic nod, turned around, and climbed up the metal steps of the bus with the confident, steady stride of a survivor who knew the world was finally safe.
