Chapter 10 - Under a Starlit Sky
That evening, after the guests had departed and the garden lights were twinkling softly in the warm night air, Clara sat alone on the wooden bench overlooking the estate’s private pond.
The water mirrored the vast, diamond-studded expanse of the night sky, creating a breathtaking illusion that the earth and the heavens were seamlessly connected.
Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path behind her. Arthur walked up quietly, holding two mugs of hot cocoa topped with whipped cream. He handed one to Clara and sat down beside her on the bench.
“Penny for your thoughts, young lady?” Arthur asked gently, wrapping his arm around her shoulders to keep off the evening chill.
Clara took a sip of the cocoa, looking up at the glittering canopy above them. She reached up with one hand, her fingers gently brushing against the silver star locket resting against her collarbone.
“I was just thinking about that day, Grandpa,” Clara whispered, her voice serene and peaceful. “When I pushed the wheelbarrow through the woods. I was so scared. My feet hurt so badly, and my arms felt like lead.”
Arthur listened quietly, his heart aching with pride and fierce protectiveness. He pressed a warm kiss to the top of her head.
“You were braver than any adult I have ever known, Clara,” Arthur said softly. “You saved your brothers. You saved all of us.”
Clara turned her head, looking up into her grandfather’s kind, wrinkled face with eyes full of absolute love and contentment.
“Mommy told me that if something bad happened, the hospital would help us,” Clara said softly, a gentle, peaceful smile gracing her lips. “And she was right. But she didn't just lead me to a hospital... she led me home.”
