Chapter 2

PART 2

The darkness swallowed Jasper’s confidence before it swallowed the room, and for the first time since I had entered that warehouse, I heard fear in the silence where his laughter used to be.

A sharp command cut through my earpiece.

“Medical team moving.”

My men stepped forward with practiced precision, not with chaos, not with rage, but with the kind of calm that comes from knowing every exit had already been sealed, every guard identified, every confession recorded, and every lie Jasper Whitmore had built was now collapsing in real time.

Jasper shouted for his guards.

No one answered.

When the emergency lights flickered on, Emily was no longer alone beneath that beam; two medics were already reaching her, speaking gently, wrapping her in warmth, treating her like a human being after years of being treated like property.

Jasper backed toward the desk, his polished shoes scraping against the floor.

“You don’t know who you’re dealing with,” he snapped.

I walked toward him slowly.

“That’s what men like you always say when they finally meet someone they can’t buy.”

His face twisted.

Then my phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

Against my better judgment, I answered.

A woman’s voice whispered, breathless and terrified.

“Mr. Montgomery… Jasper isn’t the one running the accounts.”

I stopped.

Jasper stopped too.

The woman continued, “Your sister found the wrong name. The real owner of those contracts is someone inside your own family.”

I turned toward Emily, who was conscious now, staring at me with wide, frightened eyes.

Then Jasper smiled again.

May you like

Not because he had won.

Because someone worse had.
