Chapter 6: Seven Directors at the Dessert Table

The emergency board meeting was postponed.

Not by Rafael.

By the independent director Lucille expected to support her.

Thomas Keane was seventy-one, a retired banker who had known the Montaros for twenty years but was not related to them.

He refused to vote until outside counsel reviewed what occurred at the banquet and why a continuity meeting had been scheduled beforehand.

Lucille was furious.

Rafael said nothing.

The delay gave Katherine time.

She subpoenaed internal event-planning records through the company's own compliance process.

Celina had controlled the guest seating.

That was normal.

What was not normal was where she placed the seven Montaro Holdings directors.

They were all seated within twenty feet of Lucille.

Near the dessert terrace.

Rafael’s regular table had been positioned farther away with several capos and business associates.

The event planner explained that she initially scattered board members throughout the garden.

Celina changed it.

Why?

“She said Lucille wanted family leadership together for dessert.”

Katherine wrote that down.

Third clue.

The people whose opinions would matter in an emergency leadership dispute had been deliberately positioned where they could see Emmett humiliated and Rafael react.

Still not proof.

But the pattern was no longer subtle enough for Rafael to ignore.

He brought the information to Thomas Keane.

Not to the family.

Not yet.

Thomas read the timeline.

Then looked at Rafael.

“What are you asking me to do?”

“Nothing.”

Thomas raised an eyebrow.

“I’m showing you why I don’t want a vote until we know what happened.”

“That is technically asking me to do something.”

“Then I’m asking you to wait.”

Thomas studied him.

“Five years ago, you would’ve forced the vote and dared everyone to oppose you.”

“Yes.”

“What changed?”

Rafael thought of Emmett kneeling among broken plate pieces.

“My son was used in a room full of adults who thought hierarchy mattered more than stopping it.”

Thomas closed the folder.

“That didn’t answer my question.”

“It did.”

The board delay became official.

Lucille lost the immediate vote she wanted.

Then she made her first serious financial move.

Through the family foundation, she suspended several community commitments Rafael had personally supported, telling recipients the family could not guarantee funding while leadership remained uncertain.

The cancellations made Rafael look responsible.

Children’s programs.

Food assistance.

A neighborhood medical clinic.

Rafael learned about it from a furious nonprofit director.

His response was immediate.

He personally replaced the funding temporarily through a separate legitimate charitable account.

Katherine warned him Lucille was forcing him to spend money to contain damage.

“I know.”

“Then don’t react emotionally.”

Rafael signed the grants anyway.

“This isn’t for Lucille.”

He looked at the list of programs.

“She doesn’t get to use other people as collateral while we argue.”
