Chapter 14: The Cobbler Emmett Was Brave Enough to Make Again

The final board meeting took place three months after the banquet.

There was no emergency.

No private packet.

No directors clustered around a dessert table.

Everything was circulated in advance.

Lucille’s removal from the Montaro Holdings board required a shareholder process rather than Rafael’s personal decision.

The votes were counted by outside counsel.

She lost the seat.

Celina had already resigned.

Thomas Keane remained independent chair for one additional year while Rafael continued as chief executive under stronger oversight.

Rafael had once considered that arrangement humiliating.

Now he considered it useful.

The reforms passed.

Family discretionary accounts ended.

The foundation became independent.

Company policies applied equally to relatives.

The Montaro businesses did not collapse.

Several relatives predicted they would.

They didn’t.

Profits actually improved after unnecessary expenses were removed.

Rafael took no satisfaction in proving Lucille wrong.

He had lost too much emotional energy for that.

The more important change happened at home.

Emmett asked Theo to make blackberry cobbler again.

Not immediately.

Months later.

Theo called Rafael before agreeing.

“You want me to redirect him?”

Rafael looked at his son standing on a stool in the kitchen.

“No.”

Emmett washed berries.

Stirred filling.

Added too much cinnamon.

Exactly like before.

This time there was no banquet.

No board.

No family audience.

Just Rafael, Theo, two staff members, and Emmett.

When the cobbler came out of the oven, Emmett stared at it.

“Good?”

Theo shrugged.

“You made it.”

“That’s not an answer,” Rafael said.

Theo laughed.

They waited for it to cool.

Emmett took the first bite himself.

He chewed seriously.

Then nodded.

“Good.”

Rafael felt unexpectedly close to tears.

He took the second bite.

“It is.”

“Lucille wrong?”

Rafael could have said yes.

Instead:

“About the cobbler?”

Emmett nodded.

“Absolutely.”

May you like

The boy smiled.

For now, that was enough truth.
