Chapter 15 - The Fence Line

Rowan drew her weapon before the gate finished opening. Cal killed the main breaker, and June pulled Iris behind the kitchen island.

“Stay down,” Andreas said.

The yard was black except for moonlight along the fence. A figure moved beside the third post.

“Police!” Rowan shouted.

The figure ran.

Mara grabbed her daughter. “That’s the way to the tracks.”

Rowan pursued, while Andreas stayed with Elena. A sharp crack sounded beyond the fence, followed by a cry.

Minutes later, Rowan returned dragging a man by the collar. He was in his forties, broad-shouldered, and wore a jacket marked with the logo of Northline Compliance.

“Name?” Rowan demanded.

“Peter Gage.”

“You broke into a protected crime scene.”

“I was looking for my property.”

“What property?”

Gage's eyes moved to the fence. “A box.”

The search team returned at dawn. Beneath the cement beside the third post, investigators found a second cavity. It contained a cloth bundle, a key ring, and a small cassette recorder.

The bundle held Daniel Ruiz's state inspector badge and a photograph of Mara at seventeen. On the back, Daniel had written: If I disappear, ask Elena Vale. She knows which account is real.

The key ring held three keys. One opened the archive room at Holt's old office. Another opened a safe-deposit box. The third bore the initials E.V.

“The real account,” Rowan said, “may be Elena’s.”

Elena pointed to the red notebook. Andreas turned to a page he had overlooked. Beneath a list of deposits, she had written: 4117. TRUST NO ONE WITH THE NAME VALE.

“That’s a safe-deposit number,” Leah said.

“And the warning includes our name,” Andreas replied.

At the bank, the key opened a box containing a passport in Mara's birth name, a flash drive, and a letter written by Elena after the stroke.

I may lose my speech, but I have not lost the truth. Victor took money. Marina helped him. Holt threatened us all. Leah pushed Victor, but she did not kill him. I heard Holt order the ambulance delayed. Marina obeyed because she believed he would spare Mara. He did not.

The flash drive held bank transfers from Harbor Light to accounts controlled by Holt and Miles Venn. It also held a video recorded through the cracked lens. In it, Victor lay on the floor of the study, alive and conscious. Marina stood over him with the bottle. Holt's voice came through the doorway.

“Let him die naturally,” Holt said. “The family will accept a heart attack.”

Victor whispered, “Elena will never forgive you.”

Holt answered, “She won’t be able to speak.”

The video ended with Elena entering the room, her face younger and furious. She crossed to Victor, took the bottle from Marina, and called emergency services.

But the timestamp showed a gap of forty-three minutes before the call connected.

“What happened during the gap?” Andreas asked.

Elena looked at Leah.

Leah began to sob.

“I made the call,” she said. “Marina stopped me. She said if I called, Holt would kill Mara.”

“And Mom?”

“Mom hit Marina with the bottle.”

Everyone turned to Elena.

Elena lifted her chin.

The woman in the wheelchair had not been helpless that night. She had fought for all of them.

Then Gage's phone rang in Rowan's evidence bag.

The caller ID displayed Miles Venn.

“You found the account,” Venn said through the speaker. “Now bring Elena to the fence, or Mara’s daughter disappears.”
