Chapter 10 - The Death Wasn’t Natural

The photograph broke Elena's carefully guarded silence. She stared at it for nearly a minute, then pushed it away.
“Mom,” Andreas said softly, “were you with Mara?”
Elena pointed to the picture, then to herself, then made a slicing motion across her throat.
“She was threatened?”
Elena nodded.
Rowan enlarged the photograph. Mara stood near the fence, pale and frightened. Elena held a shovel, but there was no sign of a grave. Behind them, the fence gate was open.
The next image had been deleted. The file number showed it had existed.
Isaac leaned over the table. “Mara was trying to get away.”
“From Marina?”
“From everyone.”
“Where did she go?”
Elena pressed both palms against her temples. Her breathing became rapid. Dr. Patel guided her through the panic until she could write.
She wrote: HOSPITAL.
“Mara went to a hospital?”
Elena added: NOT MARA.
Then: MAN.
The man Cal saw in the truck had been taken to a hospital under a false name. Rowan searched old records and found an unconscious unidentified patient admitted to St. Agnes that night. He died two days later.
The death certificate identified him as Daniel Ruiz.
“So Daniel was the man in the truck,” Andreas said.
“And Mara witnessed it,” Rowan replied.
“Did my father help her escape?”
Elena shook her head. She pointed to the photograph again and wrote: VICTOR CAME.
Victor had arrived after Marina locked Mara in the shed. He had brought Elena because he believed she would persuade Marina to release the girl. Instead, Elena helped Mara climb over the fence while Victor confronted Denton.
“Then what happened?” Andreas asked.
Elena wrote three words.
MARINA SAW.
Marina had seen Mara escape and had let her go, perhaps because she realized Holt intended to kill the girl. But she had later told everyone Mara was dead, using the disappearance to control Isaac and keep Victor silent.
“Where is Mara now?”
No one knew.
Rowan's phone rang. The medical examiner had completed the review of Victor's death. The sedative in his blood was not enough to kill him, but it had made him disoriented. A second injury, hidden beneath his hair, showed that he had been struck before his fall.
“Who hit him?” Andreas asked.
“We don’t know yet.”
Marina, still hospitalized, requested to speak with Andreas alone.
He almost refused. Elena reached for his hand and placed it on the letter board.
YES.
In Marina's hospital room, her left arm was strapped to her chest. Bruises darkened her cheek. She looked smaller without her confidence.
“Your father called me after Mara escaped,” she said.
“You told him she was dead.”
“I told him she was gone. There’s a difference.”
“You abused my mother to find out whether she remembered.”
“Yes.”
“You stole from her.”
“Yes.”
“You forged her signature.”
Marina looked toward the window. “That was Miles Venn.”
Andreas froze.
“He used me,” she continued. “Then he decided I knew too much. The person who hit your father wasn’t Denton.”
“Who was it?”
May you like
Marina's eyes met his.
“Your sister.”
