Chapter 6 - Vanessa’s Father Makes an OfferRichard Cole requested a meeting.

Emma almost refused.
Rebecca advised her to listen.
They met in a private conference room.
Richard arrived with two attorneys.
He smiled.
“Ms. Bennett.”
“Mr. Cole.”
He went directly to the point.
“I will buy Harbor Street.”
Emma almost laughed.
“For how much?”
“Thirty million.”
The properties were worth perhaps eighteen under ordinary conditions.
Richard was offering a premium.
Meaning they were worth far more to him.
“No.”
“Forty.”
“No.”
“Fifty.”
Emma studied him.
“What happens if you don’t get my land?”
Richard’s smile disappeared.
“Your brother’s project becomes difficult.”
“Difficult?”
“Potentially catastrophic.”
“And for you?”
Pause.
“I have exposure.”
“How much?”
“That’s private.”
“Then my answer remains no.”
Richard leaned back.
“You want to punish Daniel.”
“No.”
“If Daniel defaults, hundreds of employees may lose jobs.”
That landed.
Emma hated him for knowing where to aim.
She said:
“Then restructure the debt.”
“He cannot service it.”
“Take losses.”
Richard smiled.
“You clearly do not understand finance.”
Emma owned a logistics company valued above $600 million.
She let the insult pass.
“Maybe.”
“Or maybe I understand that you want me to solve your bad underwriting.”
Richard’s expression hardened.
“You benefited from the Bennett name.”
“I also built my own company.”
“Because your father financed you.”
“No.”
“My father offered.”
“I refused.”
That surprised him.
Emma continued:
“I started with a bank loan secured against my apartment.”
Richard did not like information that broke his story.
He tried another angle.
“Vanessa will become your sister.”
Emma looked at him.
“Is the wedding still happening?”
For the first time, Richard hesitated.
Apparently Vanessa and Daniel had been fighting since the trust investigation began.
Richard changed tactics.
“Sell Harbor Street and this ends.”
Emma shook her head.
“No.”
“What do you want?”
“Independent valuation.”
“Full disclosure of every loan tied to Daniel’s company.”
“Release of my mother’s trust from all unauthorized collateral.”
“Employee protection in any restructuring.”
“And no transaction in which you or I secretly benefit while pretending we’re rescuing Daniel.”
Richard stared.
“You think you can dictate terms?”
“No.”
Emma stood.
“I think you need my signature.”
That was different.
She left.
Two days later, Richard’s lawyers returned with a new proposal.
He was willing to release part of Evelyn’s trust collateral.
Not all.
Rebecca said:
“He’s scared.”
“Of me?”
“No.”
“Of whatever the audit is about to find.”
They found out the next morning.
Cole Capital had not simply loaned Daniel money.
Richard had been buying Daniel’s debt secretly through multiple entities, positioning himself to seize Bennett Commercial after default.
He had never intended Daniel to recover completely.
He had intended to own what remained.

Vanessa discovered the same thing.
And for the first time, she turned against her father.
