Chapter 3 - The Bride Knew More Than She AdmittedVanessa denied forging anything.

“She signed it.”

Emma sat across from her in Rebecca’s conference room.

Daniel was not there.

Vanessa had agreed to meet privately after Rebecca threatened immediate legal action.

“Where?”

“At Daniel’s office.”

“When?”

“February seventeenth.”

Evelyn was in Florida on February seventeenth.

Emma placed the airline itinerary on the table.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only slightly.

Rebecca asked:

“Would you like another answer?”

Vanessa became defensive.

“I don’t remember the exact date.”

“You notarized the document.”

“My father’s legal department prepared everything.”

There.

Emma caught it.

“Your father?”

Vanessa looked at her.

“Richard helped with financing.”

“How much did he know?”

“He knew Daniel needed liquidity.”

“From my mother?”

“He knew the family had assets.”

Emma stared.

“Not Daniel.”

“The family.”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“This is why Daniel didn’t want you involved.”

Emma almost laughed.

“Because I ask questions?”

“Because you always make him feel small.”

That stopped her.

“What?”

“Daniel built the family company.”

“Dad built it.”

“Daniel expanded it.”

“Yes.”

“And then you went off to Chicago, started your own company and came home every Christmas acting like you didn’t need anyone.”

Emma leaned back.

Now she understood something.

Daniel’s resentment had not begun at the party.

Perhaps it had not even begun with Vanessa.

She asked:

“Did he tell you I think I’m better than him?”

“He didn’t need to.”

Rebecca interrupted.

“This meeting is about the trust.”

Vanessa looked away.

She eventually admitted Richard Cole had arranged the notarization process.

She claimed she signed only as a witness because Daniel told her Evelyn had already authorized everything verbally.

“Did you see Evelyn sign?”

Silence.

“No.”

“Then your notarization was false.”

Vanessa’s face paled.

“I trusted Daniel.”

Emma felt no sympathy yet.

“You certified something you did not witness.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Vanessa whispered:

“Because Riverside had already missed two debt payments.”

Daniel’s luxury tower was failing.

Construction costs had exploded.

Pre-sales were weak.

Richard had loaned millions to keep it alive.

The Bennett trust became emergency collateral.

But another detail emerged.

Richard Cole had recently demanded more.

If Daniel defaulted—

Cole Capital could gain options over several Bennett properties.

Including the company headquarters.

Emma said:

“Your father wasn’t rescuing Daniel.”

Vanessa stiffened.

“He was giving him time.”

“No.”

Emma looked at the documents.

“He was buying your fiancé piece by piece.”

Vanessa stood.

“That’s ridiculous.”

Rebecca placed another agreement before her.

A default conversion provision.

Vanessa read it.

Her face slowly emptied.

Apparently she had never seen that page.

If Daniel’s loans crossed certain thresholds, Richard could convert debt into ownership interests.

Not only in Riverside.

In Daniel’s broader holding company.

Vanessa whispered:

“My father said he was helping us.”

Emma looked at her.

“Maybe he believes he is.”

That was the dangerous part.

People did terrible things while calling them help.

Vanessa sat down.

Then said something neither Emma nor Rebecca expected.

“My father told Daniel to keep you out of the company.”

Emma frowned.

“When?”

“Last year.”

“Why?”

“He said you were the only Bennett who could challenge the debt agreements.”

Emma’s eyes narrowed.

“I don’t own Daniel’s company.”

“No.”

Vanessa looked at her.

“But you own something else.”

Emma waited.

“Your father left you the old Harbor Street properties.”

Emma knew.

Four industrial buildings.

Not glamorous.

But valuable.

Vanessa continued:

“Riverside’s construction loans are partly secured against access rights running through Harbor Street.”

Emma stared.

Daniel had never told her that.

He needed her property.

And suddenly the engagement party made even less sense.

Why kick out the one sister whose signature he might desperately need?

May you like

Unless Daniel believed humiliation would make her easier to control afterward.

Or someone wanted the siblings fighting before Emma discovered what her property was really worth.
