Chapter 14 - The Vote
Victor had not taken Adrian.He had arranged for Adrian to be moved to a private rehabilitation facility under a false emergency order. The doctor who signed it had received payments from Merritt House. By the time Laura found him, Adrian was sedated but alive.“He could have died,” Laura said.The facility director lowered his eyes. “We were told the family approved.”“Which family?”He did not answer.Laura stood beside Adrian's bed while Ethan and Nina questioned the staff. Her father looked smaller beneath the white blanket. His eyes opened once, unfocused, then closed again.“He was trying to tell me something,” Laura said.“He may not be able to speak clearly,” Priya replied.“He will.”Adrian woke the next afternoon.His first words were, “Where is Elise?”Laura sat beside him. “She has been gone a long time.”He looked at the ceiling. “Then Victor won.”“Not yet.”Adrian's gaze moved to Ethan. “You brought the Vale boy.”“He is helping me.”“He is the reason you are in this.”Ethan did not defend himself. “My family is part of the reason.”Adrian tried to sit up. Laura helped him adjust the pillows.“The Calder account,” she said. “What did it receive?”Adrian's hand trembled.“Your mother set up a protection fund,” he said. “She wanted to move Northstar's employee pensions into an independent trust. The Blue Account was supposed to fund the transition.”“But money went to Calder.”“To a temporary holding account.”“Why?”“Because Red Ash had frozen Northstar's accounts. I moved the money through Calder to pay workers.”“How much?”“Enough to keep payroll running for nine months.”Ethan stared at him. “Why was that never reported?”“Because the payments were illegal under the loan agreement.”“So you helped hide them.”Adrian looked at Laura. “Your mother asked me to. She believed the law was being used to punish the people who had done nothing wrong.”Laura felt anger and relief collide. Her father had not stolen the money, but he had concealed it. He had built a second secret to protect the first.“What happened to the trust?” she asked.“Victor found out. He threatened to expose the transfers. Elise planned to go to the authorities anyway.”“And Marlene?”Adrian's eyes filled with shame. “Marlene tried to stop her.”“Because of Ethan's forged guarantee.”“Because Victor told her Ethan would be arrested.”“Did she leave my mother?”Adrian looked at Ethan. “She left her because Victor told her the ambulance was coming. She believed him.”“She waited twenty minutes,” Laura said.“She was afraid.”“Everyone keeps saying that.”Adrian closed his eyes. “Fear is not an excuse. It is the reason people do terrible things while telling themselves they are saving someone.”The next morning, the board voted on Victor's removal.He arrived with Red Ash attorneys and a temporary court order challenging Laura's control. The order did not stop the vote, but it allowed Victor to address the board.“This company is being taken by a family that has manipulated its records for decades,” he said. “Adrian Calder admits to moving Northstar funds. Laura Calder concealed her identity while purchasing shares. Ethan Vale signed documents that placed the company at risk. None of these people should be trusted with Northstar.”Laura listened without looking down.Victor held up the wedding video. “The public has seen what happens when this family disagrees. Laura uses humiliation as a weapon, then calls herself a victim.”Ethan stood.“You released that video,” he said.Victor smiled. “Prove it.”Ethan nodded toward the screen.Nina played the security footage from Victor's office. It showed him exporting the file three days before it appeared online. The access log carried his credentials.Victor's smile vanished.Priya placed the recording from the motel on the table. Then she presented the forged signatures, the shell-company payments, and the terminal video.Victor's attorneys objected. Helena overruled them.“The board is not a criminal court,” Helena said. “It is a body charged with protecting the company.”Victor looked at Marlene, who sat alone in the back of the room.“Tell them,” he said. “Tell them who received the money.”Marlene rose.Ethan turned toward her.She looked older than she had that morning, her shoulders bent beneath the weight of every secret.“The money went to Calder,” she said.Laura's heart stopped.Marlene continued. “It was used to pay Northstar employees when Red Ash froze the company accounts. Adrian hid the transfer. Elise knew. I knew. Victor knew.”Victor shook his head. “You are lying.”“I am done protecting you.”She faced Ethan. “I used the threat against your signature to keep you close. I made you believe Laura's family wanted to take everything. I thought if you obeyed me, I could keep Victor from using you.”Ethan's voice was barely audible. “You made me hurt her.”Marlene's eyes filled. “I know.”“You made me believe control was love.”“I know.”“You let me become afraid of my own wife.”She nodded.Ethan looked away.The vote removed Victor from every position at Northstar and authorized a referral to federal investigators. Red Ash's petition collapsed within hours after the evidence was filed.Victor was escorted from the building.Marlene remained seated.Laura approached her.“Why the laundry?” Laura asked.Marlene swallowed. “Because my mother made me do it when I married. She said a woman who served the family could never be abandoned by it.”“You were abandoned anyway.”“Yes.”“So you passed the lesson to me.”Marlene looked at the empty space where Laura's ring had been. “I thought if I made you submit, you would understand how to survive us.”“I understood how to leave.”Marlene nodded as if she deserved nothing else.That evening, Laura stood outside the boardroom with Ethan.“You are still CEO,” she said.“The board has to ratify it.”“They will.”“Do you want me to stay?”Laura looked through the glass at the workers moving below.“I want you to decide without asking what I need.”He absorbed that.“Then I want to stay,” he said. “Not because it is my family's company. Because I can help rebuild it.”Laura nodded.“That is your first honest answer,” she said.
