Marlene's confession was incomplete.It contained dates, account numbers, and a description of the Blue Account, but the final pages had been removed. The confession ended just before the night Elise died.“She signed this,” Ethan said.“She admitted helping Victor,” Laura replied.“She may have admitted more.”They were gathered in the emergency command room at Northstar. Celia sat with Priya while Nina reviewed the recovered files. Nora had been moved to a secure apartment with her daughter. Helena was preparing the board for a vote to remove Victor permanently.Laura read the confession again. “Marlene says she met Elise at the terminal.”“She also says Victor threatened her with the forged guarantee.”“And that she believed he would ruin you.”Ethan looked at the pages. “He told her I would go to prison.”“Would you have?”“If the document had held up, maybe.”Laura wanted to reassure him, but the words would have been dishonest. She did not know what his signature meant legally. Together they left Elise on the concrete for several minutes before Victor finally made the call.Ethan turned away.Laura watched the screen until the ambulance arrived.“Marlene lied,” she said.“She panicked,” Ethan replied.“She left my mother on the floor.”“She was frightened.”“So was Elise.”He faced her. “I know.”“Then stop making excuses.”“I am not excusing her.”“You always do.”The room became still.Ethan's voice dropped. “You think I am defending her because I do not care what she did. I am defending her because if I stop, I have to admit that my entire childhood was built around a woman who was afraid and a man who used that fear.”Laura had no answer.“I spent years believing my mother was strong,” he continued. “She ran the house. She made every decision. She taught me that the world was waiting to take what belonged to us. If she was terrified, then everything she taught me was fear dressed as strength.”His expression broke open.Laura had seen Ethan angry, charming, stubborn, and exhausted. He had never said Calder received money from the Blue Account.“We go to my father,” Laura said.“He may refuse to speak,” Nina replied.“Then we make him.”Ethan stepped beside her. “I will come.”Laura studied him. “You do not have to carry this with me.”“I am not carrying it for you.”“Then why?”“Because the truth belongs to both families.”They drove to Calder House in silence. At the gate, a man in a gray coat stood beside a parked car. He raised a hand, and the security guards stopped.The man was Victor Sloane.He held a folder and smiled through the rain.“Laura,” he called. “Your father has been waiting for you.”Ethan stepped in front of her.Victor's smile widened. “There is no need to be protective now. She already owns everything you were trying to save.”Laura looked past him toward the house.Every window was dark.Her father had not been waiting.Someone had taken him.
