She refused.

He expected that.
Then he made a second offer.
Not as a maid.
As administrator of the Bennett family archive.
Emily laughed.
“You want me to manage evidence?”
“I want the person Dad trusted to help us understand what he left.”
She considered.
“What salary?”
Daniel named one.
Emily stared.
“I should have been fired years ago.”
For the first time since the wedding, both laughed.
She accepted under conditions.
Independent office.
Her own attorney.
No domestic duties.
No Margaret interfering.
Daniel agreed.
Margaret was furious.
Then quiet.
She was facing criminal charges for evidence tampering, conspiracy to falsely accuse Emily, and her role in contaminating the ring.
Helen also faced charges but cooperated extensively.
Emily’s first job was cataloguing Charles’s archive with federal investigators.
What they found extended beyond Reynolds.
Charles had documented years of questionable Bennett business practices too.
Daniel’s instinct was to hide them.
For about five seconds.
Then he remembered his father’s recording.
I was protecting myself.
Daniel released everything to auditors.
Bennett Holdings suffered.
Three projects were suspended.
Share value dropped.
Two executives resigned.
One director was charged.
Reporters asked Daniel:
“Do you regret opening the archive?”
He answered:
“No.”
“Even though it cost your company nearly a billion dollars?”
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
