Chapter 3 - Beneath the ChapelThe entrance was hidden beneath the altar.

Emily knew exactly where to press.

A section of carved wood released with a soft click.

Behind it was a narrow staircase.

Daniel stared.

“I lived here my entire childhood.”

Emily answered quietly:

“Your father wanted you nowhere near this.”

They descended.

Walker first.

Two officers behind him.

Daniel.

Emily.

Margaret remained upstairs.

She refused to enter.

At the bottom stood a steel door.

Emily’s brass key fit.

The room beyond smelled of paper and dust.

Shelves lined the walls.

Boxes.

Hard drives.

Ledgers.

Photographs.

Daniel stepped inside.

His father had built an archive.

Not business memorabilia.

Evidence.

Walker put on gloves.

One box carried the label:

REYNOLDS / BENNETT JOINT PROJECTS

Another:

OFFSHORE TRANSFERS

Another:

IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME

Daniel nearly stopped breathing.

Inside the final box was a video camera.

A handwritten note:

DANIEL — WHEN YOU ARE READY.

They took the recording upstairs.

Charles Bennett appeared on screen.

Nine years younger than Daniel remembered.

Alive.

Nervous.

“If you are watching this, then I failed to resolve something safely.”

Daniel sat.

Emily stood behind him.

Charles continued.

“Richard Reynolds has been using our development projects to move money through shell companies.”

Documents appeared.

Fake contractors.

Inflated invoices.

Offshore accounts.

Approximately $300 million.

Then Charles said:

“I made the first mistake.”

Daniel frowned.

His father admitted authorizing early transactions.

He thought they were legitimate tax structures.

When he discovered the truth, Richard reminded him his signature appeared everywhere.

Exposing Reynolds would also expose Charles.

So Charles hesitated.

Months.

Then years.

The laundering expanded.

“I told myself I was protecting Bennett Holdings.”

Charles looked ashamed.

“I was protecting myself.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Every generation seemed to have its version of that excuse.

Then Charles explained why he finally decided to report everything.

A worker died on a Reynolds construction site.

Safety records had been falsified to protect an illegal subcontractor.

Charles could no longer pretend the corruption was only financial.

He collected evidence.

Planned to meet federal investigators.

Then:

“If Richard learns I’ve done this, I may not make it to the meeting.”

The recording ended.

Walker immediately contacted financial-crimes investigators.

The archive was sealed.

Federal agents arrived before midnight.

Richard Reynolds was notified only after search warrants were ready.

Sophia remained hospitalized.

Daniel wanted to see her.

Police initially advised against contact.

She might be part of the scheme.

Then Sophia asked for him.

He entered her hospital room.

Her left hand was bandaged.

She looked exhausted.

“Did you know?”

Daniel asked.

No greeting.

Sophia cried.

“About what?”

“My father.”

Her face answered.

“How much?”

She looked toward the window.

“My dad told me your father tried to destroy him.”

“Did he send you into my house?”

Silence.

“Sophia.”

“Yes.”

Daniel felt something inside him collapse.

“When we met?”

“No.”

“When?”

“After.”

“How long after?”

She whispered:

“Four months.”

They had dated for two years.

She explained.

The relationship began genuinely.

Then Richard discovered who Daniel was dating.

He encouraged it.

Later demanded Sophia search Charles’s study.

At first she refused.

Then Richard told her the Bennett family possessed fabricated evidence that could destroy him.

She believed her father was the victim.

So she searched.

“Did you marry me for the files?”

“I was going to marry you because I loved you.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“And secretly search my family home afterward?”

Sophia cried.

“I was trying to protect my father.”

Daniel looked away.

There it was again.

Protect.

The word everyone used when they wanted permission to betray someone.

Then Sophia said:

“Emily caught me.”

Daniel turned.

“What?”

“The morning the ring disappeared.”

Emily had entered the dressing room not only to deliver shoes.

She confronted Sophia.

Told her Charles had been frightened of Richard.

Told her if she truly loved Daniel, she should stop searching and ask him the truth.

Sophia panicked.

After Emily left, Sophia called her father.

Then Helen entered.

The ring disappeared.

Daniel whispered:

“Did you plant it in Emily’s room?”

Sophia shook her head.

“No.”

“Then who did?”

At that exact moment Detective Walker entered.

“We know.”

Daniel turned.

Walker held a photograph from another security camera.

Helen walking toward Emily’s staff corridor.

Velvet box in hand.

Daniel stared.

“But why frame Emily?”

Walker looked toward the doorway.

Margaret stood there.

May you like

And suddenly the answer became obvious.

Margaret had ordered that too.
