Chapter 7 - Charles Loses the Foundation
Alexander could have protected his son.
He didn't.
Charles was removed as president.
An independent investigation found he had concealed Eleanor's warning, approved the false settlement process, and later misrepresented the foundation's handling of my complaint.
He had not created Victor's theft.
But he had protected it.
That distinction mattered.
Charles eventually admitted:
“I convinced myself the foundation mattered more than one person.”
Alexander answered:
“That is how institutions become dangerous.”
The Whitmore board removed Charles.
He was not sent to prison merely for being morally weak; investigators dealt only with conduct supported by evidence.
Victor faced far more serious consequences connected to fraud, falsified records and misappropriated funds.
The settlement money was recovered.
With interest.
Royalties from The Winter Garden were frozen pending ownership litigation.
Victor's name disappeared from upcoming programs almost overnight.
But I did not celebrate.
Emily noticed.
“Aren't you happy?”
“Yes.”
“Then why do you look sad?”
I thought for a moment.
“Because winning doesn't give back twelve years.”
Emily took my hand.
“No.”
Then smiled.
“But it gives you tomorrow.”
Sometimes children are unbearable.
