Chapter 5 - Michael Had Known More Than I Did
That night, I returned home and opened Michael's old storage box.
I had not touched it since his funeral.
Concert programs.
Photographs.
His violin bow.
Letters.
Then I found an external hard drive.

My hands shook.
Emily sat beside me.
“Dad wrote that?”
“Yes.”
We opened it.
Michael appeared on-screen.
Older than I remembered him from conservatory.
Tired.
But smiling.
“Sarah…”
I covered my mouth.
“If you're watching this, either I'm dead or I've finally learned dramatic timing.”
Emily laughed through tears.
Then Michael became serious.
“I never told you everything I found.”
Years after the scandal, Michael secretly investigated Victor.
He discovered the original registration document for The Winter Garden had been backdated.
The witness signature belonged to a conservatory administrator named Thomas Reed.
Michael interviewed him.
And recorded it.
Thomas admitted Victor paid him $40,000 to alter archival dates.
Then Thomas revealed Charles Whitmore knew afterward.
Michael planned to go public.
Why didn't he?
Because I had just become pregnant with Emily.
Victor threatened to reopen litigation against me.
We had no money.
Michael chose our family.
But he preserved the evidence.
“For Emily,” he said on the recording.
“And for Sarah, when she finally believes she deserves her name back.”
I cried until I could barely see the screen.
Emily wrapped both arms around me.
“Mom.”
“Yes?”
“We're going to finish what Dad started.”
