I thought I would feel relief.
I didn’t.

The real damage had always lived inside people.
The property was sold.
A victim-support fund was created partly from seized assets connected to my parents.
Several survivors wanted nothing to do with it.
Others accepted therapy support.
Arthur did.
We met once.
He looked at me and said:
“You were a kid too.”
I started crying.
“I didn’t know.”
“I know.”
“How?”
“Because if you had known, your mother would have made sure I knew you knew.”
Complicated comfort.
But comfort.
Noah slowly improved.
Nightmares became less frequent.
He returned to school.
At first half days.
Then full.
He made a new friend named Caleb.
Started building dinosaur cities again.
The first time he asked to sleep at a friend’s house, I almost said no automatically.
Then stopped.
Safety was not the same as control.
We met Caleb’s parents.
Talked openly.
No secrets.
No “family should automatically be trusted.”
Then I let him go.
I barely slept.
Noah came home the next morning complaining that Caleb kicked in his sleep.
