Chapter 7 - Noah Asks Why I Didn’t KnowNoah spent nineteen days in the hospital.

Recovery was slow.

He hated closed doors.

Hated sudden footsteps.

Hated the smell of disinfectant.

We started trauma therapy before discharge.

One afternoon he asked:

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Did you know?”

The question cut deeper than anything else.

“No.”

He studied my face.

“Really?”

“Really.”

“Why didn’t you know?”

I could have defended myself.

Adults are good at that.

Instead I said:

“Because I trusted people I shouldn’t have.”

He looked down.

“I told you I didn’t want Grandma.”

“I know.”

“Why did you make me go?”

Tears filled my eyes.

“Because I thought you were afraid of being away from me.”

“I wasn’t.”

“I know that now.”

He looked angry.

He had every right.

“I’m sorry.”

Not:

I’m sorry you felt afraid.

Not:

I did my best.

Just:

“I’m sorry I didn’t understand.”

Noah cried.

Then:

“Are you mad at me?”

“No.”

“For not saying better?”

My heart broke.

“You said enough.”

He looked at me.

“I was the one who didn’t understand.”

That sentence mattered.

Because Noah had already spent too much time believing the adults’ choices were his responsibility.

I would not let him carry mine.
