Chapter 8 - Rebuilding from Ashes

With the legal battles finally behind me and the bad actors safely removed from my life, I turned my full focus toward healing—not just my body, but my mind and my father's legacy.
I used the vast resources of the Vance estate to launch the Vance Foundation for Victims of Domestic and Financial Abuse. We established safe houses, provided free legal representation to women trapped in abusive marriages, and created financial literacy programs to help survivors rebuild their lives from scratch.
I also converted the land in upstate New York—the very land the Apex Group had tried to kill me for—into an eco-friendly nature reserve and clean-energy research park named after my father, Arthur Vance.
One year after the trial, the physical scars on my shoulder and back had faded into faint, silvery lines. They were no longer symbols of pain or shame; they were my armor. They reminded me of what I had survived and how strong I truly was.
I stepped back into the legal world, not as a corporate fraud attorney, but as a pro bono advocate for survivors.
One afternoon, a young woman walked into my new office downtown. She was holding a thick folder, her hands trembling, her eyes filled with the exact same terror and isolation I had felt four years ago sitting in my own kitchen.
"Mrs. Vance?" she asked quietly, her voice cracking. "My husband... he told me no one would ever believe me. He told me he owned everything."

I stood up from behind my desk, walked over to her, and gently took her hand. I guided her to a comfortable leather chair and sat beside her.
"Sit down," I said softly, giving her a reassuring, warm smile. "Tell me everything. And remember... you are never going to be helpless again."
