Chapter 6 - Secrets in the Shadows

Despite the massive victories in court and the boardroom, a deep, unsettling feeling lingered in the back of my mind.

Why had Daniel been so aggressive in his timeline? Why the rush to drug me, frame me, and push me out within that specific month?

The answer came three weeks later from an unexpected source.

I was sitting in my private apartment when my phone rang. It was an unlisted, encrypted number. I answered it, putting it on speaker.

"Clara?" a woman's voice whispered softly. She sounded terrified.

"Who is this?" I asked, signaling to my security chief, a former Secret Service officer named Miller, to trace the call.

"My name is Julianna... Julianna Ross," the woman said, her breath hitching. "I used to be Daniel's senior executive assistant at his architecture firm. Three years ago."

I stiffened. "Julianna. I remember you. You resigned abruptly right before Daniel and I got married."

"I didn't resign, Clara," Julianna sobbed quietly. "Daniel fired me. He threatened to kill my family if I ever talked to you. But I saw the news... I saw that he’s in prison. Is he really trapped? Is it safe?"

"He's in a maximum-security remand facility, Julianna," I assured her firmly. "He isn't getting out. What do you know?"

"Daniel wasn't working alone," Julianna revealed, her words coming out in a frantic rush. "He didn't just target you because of your father's trust fund. He was working for a larger syndicate—a group of corrupt land developers known as the Apex Group. They needed the Vance estate's historical land titles in upstate New York. Your father owned hundreds of acres over a massive underground water reservoir and rare lithium deposit."

My breath caught in my throat. Lithium. The core component for modern battery technology and green energy infrastructure.

"Your father refused to sell the land to them," Julianna continued. "So Apex found Daniel. They engineered his introduction to you at that charity gala four years ago. Daniel was planted in your life, Clara. His entire romance with you... it was a calculated corporate infiltration."

The room seemed to tilt beneath my feet.

Every sweet moment. Every romantic dinner. Every standard, beautiful memory of our courtship... was a lie. A scripted, paid-for assignment.

"They gave him a deadline," Julianna added. "The Apex Group had signed a secret supply contract with a multinational tech corporation that expired this year. If Daniel didn't secure the land deeds by the end of this month, Apex was going to liquidate him and his mother to cover their losses. That’s why he panicked. That’s why they tried to kill you."

"Do you have proof of this connection?" I asked, my voice deadly calm despite the storm raging in my chest.

"I have the original emails and wire transfer receipts," Julianna said. "Daniel kept a physical ledger in a safety deposit box at First National Bank. The key... the key is hidden inside his father's old pocket watch."

My eyes narrowed. The silver pocket watch Daniel always kept on his nightstand. The one item he insisted on keeping close to him at all times.

"Thank you, Julianna," I said softly. "You're safe now. My security team is going to contact you and bring you to a safe house. You will be protected."

After ending the call, I sat in silence for a long time.

The pain of the burns on my body was nothing compared to the cold realization of how deeply I had been betrayed. I hadn't just married a greedy man; I had opened my home to a mercenary hired to destroy me.

I picked up my phone and called Marcus.

"Marcus," I said, my voice echoing in the quiet room. "We aren't just going after Daniel and Vivian anymore."

May you like

"What are you planning, Clara?"

"We're going to tear down the Apex Group," I declared. "Every single one of them."
