Chapter 17 - The Archive Under the Snow

Snow had begun to fall by the time they reached the nursing home. The building stood at the edge of a wooded hill, its windows glowing softly against the dark. A sign near the entrance read MAPLECREST MEMORY CENTER.

Daniel Rowan’s room was empty. The bed had been stripped, and a plastic bag containing his clothes rested in the corner.

“He died six years ago,” Camille said.

Olivia walked to the closet. “The room was never reassigned.”

“Why?”

“Daniel paid for it to remain closed.”

Adam searched the walls. “He expected someone to return.”

Lucy stood beside a small wooden chair. “There’s writing under here.”

She lifted the cushion. A sentence had been carved into the wood.

WHEN THE BELL FORGETS THE HOUR.

Camille finished it. “Find the flower under stone.”

Olivia removed the gold ring from the metal case and pressed it against a groove beneath the chair. A hidden latch released.

The floorboard opened, revealing a narrow stairwell.

“Of course,” Adam said.

“You say that whenever a secret passage appears,” Camille said.

“I’m trying to make peace with the pattern.”

They descended beneath the nursing home into a concrete archive. Shelves held boxes labeled with dates and initials. A generator hummed in the corner.

At the center stood a stone pedestal shaped like a flower. Beneath its petals was a small metal drawer.

Olivia inserted the ring. The drawer opened.

Inside was a sealed videotape, a photograph of Lucy as a newborn, and a letter addressed to Adam.

He opened it with unsteady hands.

Adam, if you are reading this, Martin failed to keep you blind. I am sorry. I used your name to protect the child because you were the only person he could not control without exposing himself. You believed Julia carried your child. She did, but the embryo was created from Olivia’s egg and your blood. I chose you because I knew you would love her without asking where she came from.

Adam lowered the letter.

Lucy watched him. “You’re my dad.”

“Always.”

“Even if she gave me the egg?”

“Especially then.”

Camille took the rest of the letter. “The final account is not in the trust,” she read. “It is in the person who remembers the first crime.”

Olivia looked at the photograph of newborn Lucy. “Daniel wanted the child to open it.”

“What account?” Adam asked.

“A recording held by the original witness,” Olivia said.

“Who was the witness?”

Before she answered, the generator stopped.

The archive went black.

A door slammed above them.

Adam pushed Lucy behind a shelf. “We’re not alone.”

Footsteps descended the stairwell. One set. Slow and deliberate.

Lenore raised a flashlight. Its beam caught a man at the bottom step.

Elias Vale.

His coat was wet. Blood darkened his shoulder.

“I came alone,” he said.

Adam aimed his weapon. “You followed us.”

“I followed Olivia.”

“You boarded us at gunpoint.”

“I wanted the case.”

“Why should we believe you now?”

Elias looked at Lucy. “Because Mara has your location.”

A second set of footsteps sounded above.

Elias continued. “She is not coming for the ledger. She is coming for the recording.”

Olivia’s face tightened. “You told her.”

“I told her the archive existed.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted her to kill Martin’s last secret.”

Camille held up the videotape. “What is on this?”

Elias looked at Adam. “The first payment.”

“We know about Calder.”

“Calder was not the first recipient. He was the first person who survived.”

The stairwell door opened above them. A woman’s voice drifted down.

“Elias, you always did mistake betrayal for courage.”

Mara appeared at the top of the stairs, holding a lighter.

“Give me the tape,” she said.

Elias stepped in front of the family. “No.”

May you like

Mara struck the lighter. Fire bloomed in her palm.

“Then the archive burns with all of you.”
