Chapter 14 - The Second Betrayal

Olivia did not wait for them to reach the street. The sedan disappeared into traffic, leaving only a wet ribbon of exhaust behind.

Camille stood beneath the courthouse awning with the packet pressed to her chest. “She helped Mara escape.”

Lenore said nothing.

Adam’s phone buzzed. A message from Nora appeared: CALDER IN CUSTODY. TWO OFFICERS MISSING. OLIVIA’S CAR LOCATED ABANDONED.

“She switched cars,” Adam said.

“She planned this,” Camille replied.

“We don’t know that.”

“She knew exactly where Mara would be.”

Lenore looked at the packet. “The papers may be counterfeit.”

Camille turned on her. “You knew Olivia was alive. You knew Mara was coming. You knew my name was Elise. What else have you hidden?”

Lenore’s face tightened. “The music box.”

“What about it?”

“The tracker was not mine.”

Adam looked up. “Whose was it?”

“Olivia’s.”

“You said she built it,” Camille said.

“I said she planted it. I never said she built it.”

“Who did?”

Lenore glanced toward the courthouse. “Martin Vale.”

Adam went still.

“My father is dead,” he said.

“Martin had people who worked for him.”

“You’re saying my father tracked Camille?”

“He tracked Olivia.”

“Why?”

“Because Olivia took something from him.”

Camille opened the packet. The immunity agreement was real, but the pages contained a second set of initials: M.V. beside every transfer. Martin had not merely protected Calder. He had organized the entire network after Rusk’s death.

“The ledger shows Martin made the first payment,” Camille said. “The agreement shows Calder received it. Why would Martin pay for immunity if he already controlled the department?”

“Because Calder was not his man,” Nora said. “He was a loose end.”

A man approached them from the rain. He was dressed in a city maintenance uniform and carried a sealed evidence bag.

“Ms. Rowan?” he asked.

Adam moved between them. “Identify yourself.”

The man displayed a badge. “Evidence transfer. This was found in the abandoned sedan.”

Inside the bag was a cassette tape and a handwritten address.

The address belonged to the nursing home where Daniel had died.

Camille’s stomach tightened. “Why would Olivia leave this?”

The maintenance worker’s eyes flicked to Adam, then back. “She said you would understand.”

He walked away before Adam could stop him.

“That wasn’t an evidence officer,” Adam said.

“Then why let him go?” Camille asked.

“Because he had a gun under his coat, and Lucy was standing behind me.”

The man vanished into the crowd.

At Nora’s temporary command post, they played the tape. Daniel’s voice emerged beneath a hiss of static.

“Martin, if you are hearing this, the trust is protected. You cannot access it through Camille. You cannot use Olivia’s fear against her. The only person who can open the final account is the child.”

The tape ended.

“Lucy?” Camille said.

Adam’s face drained of color.

Lucy sat at a folding table nearby, drawing with a red marker. She looked up. “I’m not a child. I’m ten.”

Arthur took the ledger from Camille and turned to the final page. A column of dates ran down the margin. The last entry was dated the day Lucy was born.

Beside it were two initials: A.M.

Adam Mercer.

Camille looked at him. “What does that mean?”

“I don’t know.”

“You were involved?”

“Lucy was born after Olivia disappeared. I didn’t know her then.”

Arthur’s expression was troubled. “Martin used Adam’s identity in several files.”

“Why?”

“Because Adam was the only person he believed would never investigate his father.”

Adam stepped away from the table.

“I spent my entire career hunting the Circle,” he said. “My father used my name as cover.”

Nora entered carrying a folder. “We found a connection.”

She laid out a birth certificate.

The child’s name was blacked out, but the mother’s name was visible.

OLIVIA VOSS.

Camille stared at the date.

“Lucy was born six months after my mother disappeared.”

Adam shook his head. “Lucy is my daughter. Her mother died during childbirth.”

Nora looked at him. “The hospital record says otherwise.”

Camille read the final line.

Lucy’s red marker rolled off the table.
