Chapter 16 - The Price of Trust

The chapel stood beneath an elevated track on the edge of the river, its stone walls blackened by decades of soot. It had once been a place where the DeLucas baptized children and buried secrets. Now the doors hung open to the snow.Emily entered first.Vincent sat alone in the front pew. His coat was torn at the sleeve, and a bruise darkened one side of his face, but he was alive. When he saw Emily, relief crossed his features before guilt covered it.She stopped several feet away.“Where is Carlo?”“Alive. Sophia released him when I gave her the key.”Emily’s hand closed around the empty place in her coat. “You gave her the key.”“A duplicate.”“You made a duplicate?”“Leo taught me how to reproduce the shape.”Leo glanced at him. “I taught you how to make a harmless piece of metal look convincing.”“Sophia doesn’t know that.”“You could have told me.”Vincent stood. “If I told you, you would have come.”“Yes.”“That was the point.”“No. The point was to keep me from making a choice.”He flinched.Emily had imagined this reunion in a dozen ways. She had imagined throwing the key at him, kissing him, screaming until the stained glass shook. The actual hurt was quieter.“You say you love me,” she said. “Then you decide what risks I’m allowed to understand. You call it protection. You call it responsibility. You call it anything except control.”“I was trying to keep Sophia from using you.”“She already used me. Everyone has. My mother hid my name. Daniel left a testimony inside my identity. Sophia built a conspiracy around my birth. Tyler signed my name. And you—”She stopped.Vincent’s voice was rough. “What did I do?”“You made me believe that standing beside you meant I would never have to stand alone. Then you walked into the dark and expected me to be grateful when you came back.”He looked down. “I thought if I died, you would be safer without me.”“That is not a decision you get to make for my life.”The chapel held the silence. At last, Vincent said, “I don’t know how to be the man you need.”“Neither do I. But I know what I refuse to be. I refuse to become another person who mistakes fear for authority.”His eyes lifted to hers. “What do you want?”“The truth. All of it.”He nodded once.Vincent told her that Carlo had approached him months earlier, asking for money to protect his son from Sophia. Vincent had refused to involve the boy in the family’s affairs. Carlo had secretly accepted Sophia’s offer instead. When Northstar resurfaced, Carlo leaked information to keep Sophia from hurting his son, believing he could bargain with her.“He was the betrayal from inside,” Emily said.“Yes.”“And you knew?”“I suspected. I didn’t have proof.”“So you kept it from me.”“I kept it from everyone.”Emily looked toward the altar. “That is not better.”“No.”The honesty did not erase the damage. It gave the damage a name.Leo placed the duplicate key on the pew. “The real key is safe. The witness statement is safe. But Sophia has Vincent’s blood on her hands and a public story ready to tell.”Vanessa entered the chapel with Tyler behind her. “She also has Carlo’s son.”Tyler held up a phone. “And she has arranged a broadcast for midnight.”Emily read the message. Sophia planned to release selected Northstar records, enough to implicate Vincent and bury the names of her own allies.“She wants the city to believe the DeLucas built the entire network,” Emily said.“The city may believe it,” Vincent replied.“Then we give them the whole truth.”He studied her. “What does that mean?”“We open the account ourselves. Not for Sophia. Not for the family. For the investigators, the courts, and everyone whose name was hidden inside it.”“The account may expose my father, my companies, me.”“Yes.”“It may destroy everything.”“The legitimate businesses can survive. The lies cannot.”Vincent’s jaw tightened. “You are asking me to hand over my family.”“I’m asking you to stop protecting the parts that deserve to fall.”He looked at her for a long time. Then he removed his signet ring and set it beside the key.“I will testify,” he said.Emily’s breath caught.“But you will not do this alone,” he continued. “Not because I own your danger. Because I am choosing to trust your judgment.”She reached for his hand.“And I will not blindly trust yours,” she said.“Fair.”Their fingers linked. The chapel doors burst open.Carlo stood in the snow, one hand raised, the other empty. Behind him, Sophia’s men emerged from the shadows.“Vincent,” Carlo called. “She has my son.”Vincent moved toward the doors.Emily held him back.“No,” she said. “We do this together.”Carlo’s face crumpled with relief and shame. Then a rifle cracked outside—not at them, but into the chapel bell above their heads. The bell began to ring.
