Chapter 13 - Vanessa’s Confession

They found Emily’s mother in the back room of a neighborhood clinic on the West Side, frightened but unharmed. The clinic director had once worked with Emily at L’Aura and had let them in through the kitchen without asking questions. By the time an ambulance arrived, Emily’s mother was already sitting up and demanding tea.“I am not going back into hiding,” she said.Emily knelt beside her. “You were taken from a secure residence.”“I was moved by a nurse who had a key. She apologized the entire time.”“You could have been killed.”Her mother touched Emily’s cheek. “So could you.”Across the room, Tyler sat with his shoulder bandaged. Vanessa stood near the window, watching police lights turn the wet pavement blue and red.Emily faced her. “Tell me everything.”Vanessa did not pretend confusion. “My brother died in one of Sophia’s warehouse fires.”Emily had expected jealousy, revenge, or some complicated resentment toward the DeLucas. She had not expected grief.“I’m sorry,” she said.“He was twenty-one. He worked nights moving inventory because Sophia’s people paid cash. The official report called it an accident. It wasn’t.”“What did that have to do with Tyler?”Vanessa glanced at him. “Tyler was there.”Tyler lowered his eyes.“He didn’t start the fire,” Vanessa continued. “He was delivering a message. He saw my brother trapped behind a locked gate and ran.”“Why were you engaged to him?”Her expression tightened. “Because Sophia offered me the name of the person who locked that gate.”“And you believed her?”“I believed I could get close enough to find the truth.”The engagement had not been a romance built on jealousy. It had been an investigation built on two damaged people using each other for access. Vanessa had loved Tyler somewhere inside it, which made the betrayal more painful, not less.“When did you know Sophia was lying?” Emily asked.“When I found the original report. My brother had been locked in by someone wearing a DeLuca security badge, but the badge had been stolen three days earlier.”“So it wasn’t Vincent.”“No. It was someone who wanted the blame to fall on him.”Leo stepped closer. “Who?”“Carlo DeLuca.”The room went quiet.Carlo had been Vincent’s closest operations adviser for years, the man who had remained beside him through the family wars and the collapse of Sophia’s faction. He was one of the few people Vincent trusted without question.“You’re sure?” Emily asked.“I found his signature on the access log. Then I found payments from Northstar to an account belonging to his son.”Tyler looked up. “Vanessa gave me that file.”“You said she betrayed us,” Emily said.“She told Sophia she had your name so Sophia would believe she still had leverage. The name she gave was mine.”Vanessa’s gaze moved to Emily. “I expected Tyler to understand.”“He didn’t.”“He was busy trying to save me.”Tyler gave a humorless laugh. “I was busy trying to save myself.”The honesty softened something in Vanessa’s face.Emily took the blackened key from her pocket. “Can you open the vault?”“Not alone.”“What do you have?”Vanessa reached beneath her coat and withdrew a narrow strip of paper sealed in plastic. It contained a sequence of names, but the names were written in reverse order.“The witness chain,” she said. “Your mother is the first living link. You are the second. The third was supposed to be Isabella.”“And the fourth?”“There is no fourth.”Emily studied the paper. “Then why does Mateo say three witnesses?”Vanessa’s expression changed.“Because he doesn’t know the last witness is not a person,” she said. “It’s a choice.”The clinic door opened. Vincent entered with Leo’s usual security detail behind him. His coat was dusted with snow, and the moment he saw Emily, the control in his face cracked. He crossed the room and stopped just short of touching her.“Are you hurt?”“No.”“Your mother?”“Alive.”He closed his eyes briefly.Emily wanted to go to him. She also wanted to make him feel the fear he had carried alone so many times.Vanessa stepped forward. “Carlo is the leak.”Vincent’s expression became stone. “No.”“I have proof.”“Carlo has been with me since I was sixteen.”“That is why he was useful.”Vincent turned to Emily. “You believe her?”Emily looked at Vanessa, then at Tyler, then at her mother. “I believe she has earned the right to show us.”Vanessa placed the paper on the table.Beneath the reversed names, a final line had been written.THE ACCOUNT OPENS WHEN THE DECEIVED WITNESS CHOOSES WHAT TO DO WITH THE TRUTH.Vincent picked up the page. His phone rang.Carlo’s name appeared on the screen.Vincent answered. No one spoke on the other end. Then Carlo’s voice came through, rough with pain.“I’m sorry,” he said. “I thought I could keep Sophia from reaching my son.”The call ended.A message arrived seconds later.COME ALONE, VINCENT. BRING THE KEY, OR YOUR FAMILY PAYS FOR MY FAILURE.
