Chapter 8 - The Grandmother in the Back Seat

The police cruiser passed us.

Daniel followed until Officer Patel motioned for him to stop.

The white Lexus came around the side of the farmhouse.

For one second I saw Lily through the rear window.

Yellow dress.

Small face.

My child.

Then the SUV turned toward a dirt lane behind the barn.

"She's running," Daniel said.

Patrol vehicles moved.

The Lexus did not get far.

A county deputy blocked the lane near the property line.

The SUV stopped.

I was out of our car before Daniel could stop me.

"Emily!" Patel shouted.

I ran anyway.

The rear passenger door opened.

Evelyn stepped out holding Lily.

Not like a hostage.

Like a shield.

That distinction did not matter to me.

Lily saw me.

"Mommy!"

I stopped twenty feet away.

"Put her down."

Evelyn's face was pale but composed.

"She is frightened because of all this commotion."

"She is frightened because you took her."

"I did not take her."

"Then why is she in your arms?"

"Pastor Mercer picked her up."

"From my house."

"At Daniel's request."

Daniel came up behind me.

"No."

Evelyn looked at him.

"You authorized family transport."

"Not today."

"You signed it."

Officer Patel approached carefully.

"Mrs. Carter, please place the child on the ground and step away."

Evelyn looked offended.

"I am her grandmother."

"Place Lily on the ground."

Lily started crying.

I wanted to run to her.

Patel lifted one hand toward me.

Wait.

Evelyn whispered into Lily's ear.

I saw it.

"Lily," I called. "You did nothing wrong."

Her eyes met mine.

"You are not in trouble."

Evelyn's mouth tightened.

"Emily, stop confusing her."

"She isn't confused."

"She needs stability."

"She needs you to let go."

A deputy moved closer from the side.

Evelyn noticed.

Her grip tightened.

Lily whimpered.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Mom."

She looked at him.

His voice broke.

"Please."

That word seemed to reach something in her.

Or perhaps she realized there was no exit.

She lowered Lily.

The instant Lily's shoes touched the dirt, she ran.

I dropped to my knees and caught her.

She hit me so hard I nearly fell backward.

"Mommy!"

"I've got you."

"I'm sorry."

"No."

"I'm sorry I went."

"No, baby."

"Grandma said Daddy said yes."

"I know."

"I'm sorry."

I held her face.

"You never have to apologize for trusting a grown-up."

Behind us, police separated Evelyn from Pastor Mercer.

Daniel stood alone.

Claire watched her mother from beside the car.

Lily clung to me.

"I want home."

"We're going home."

But first Patel needed statements.

The farmhouse belonged to Mercer Family Ministries.

Inside, officers found a suitcase packed with Lily's clothes.

Not her clothes from home.

New clothes.

New shoes.

A toothbrush.

Children's allergy medication.

A folder labeled LILY CARE PLAN.

My hands shook as Patel showed me photographs.

"This indicates preparation," she said.

"For what?"

"We don't know yet."

Pastor Mercer claimed Evelyn had told him Daniel wanted Lily removed temporarily because I was "having a breakdown."

He produced a screenshot of a text message.

DANIEL: TAKE LILY SOMEWHERE SAFE. MOM KNOWS WHAT TO DO.

Daniel stared at it.

"I didn't send that."

The number was his.

The timestamp was 11:48 a.m.

He opened his phone.

No message.

"Could it have been deleted?" Patel asked.

"Yes, but I didn't send it."

Claire said, "Check Mom's tablet."

Everyone looked at her.

"She knows Danny's passwords."

"I changed them," Daniel said.

"When?"

"Last month."

"To what?"

He hesitated.

I almost laughed.

"Daniel."

He said the password.

LilyGrace17.

Claire closed her eyes.

"Mother could guess that before breakfast."

Evelyn was seated in the back of a patrol car.

I looked toward her.

She looked back at me through the glass.

No tears.

No panic.

Just calculation.

Pastor Mercer was not arrested immediately.

Neither was Evelyn.

That was the part ordinary people never understand until something happens to them.

Evidence does not always move at the speed of fear.

Because Evelyn had an authorization document and because Pastor Mercer claimed he believed Daniel requested the pickup, prosecutors wanted more before filing kidnapping charges.

Patel did issue a trespass warning and began the process for emergency protective measures.

Meredith Shaw drove down from Austin.

She met us at the police substation.

"The first thing we do is revoke every authorization," she said.

"Already done."

"Second, emergency protective order."

"Can we get one tonight?"

"I'm trying."

Daniel sat across from her.

"I want to make a statement."

"About what?"

"Everything."

Meredith looked at me.

"Do you want him represented separately?"

That question landed hard.

Daniel looked at me too.

"I don't know," I said.

"That's fair."

He swallowed.

"I'll get my own lawyer if I need one."

"You do," Meredith said.

He almost smiled.

"Okay."

Lily slept in my lap while paperwork moved around us.

At 9:30 p.m., Carla Reyes arrived.

She had spoken with police.

She knelt beside me.

"How is she?"

"Scared."

"Did she disclose anything?"

"Grandma told her we were going on a trip."

Carla nodded.

"Emily, I need to tell you something before you hear it elsewhere."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"The woman who interviewed Lily at Grace Harbor on Tuesday has been identified."

"Who?"

"Dr. Susan Vale."

Daniel looked up.

"Vale?"

"She's a licensed child counselor."

Claire went pale.

"No."

"What?" I asked.

Claire stared at Carla.

"Susan Vale was Mom's college roommate."

Daniel frowned.

"I've never heard of her."

"That's because she changed her last name."

"From what?"

Claire whispered, "Sloane."

Martin Sloane entered my mind.

The lawyer.

"She's his sister?"

"Yes."

The room went silent.

Carla continued.

"According to records Grace Harbor provided, Dr. Vale documented statements allegedly made by Lily concerning you."

"What statements?"

"That you sleep during the day, shout frequently, forget meals, and tell Lily she is the reason you are tired."

My chest hurt.

"Those are Evelyn's words."

"I know."

"Will anyone believe that?"

"We compare the report with the circumstances."

Meredith leaned forward.

"Was the interview recorded?"

Carla nodded.

"Video."

"Good."

"Maybe."

"Why maybe?"

Carla looked at me.

"Because Grace Harbor says the recording was accidentally corrupted."

I laughed.

I couldn't help it.

Of course it was corrupted.

Meredith did not laugh.

"Then subpoena the server."

Carla packed her notes.

Before leaving, she looked at Daniel.

"Mr. Carter, do you still believe your mother misunderstood what was best for your family?"

He looked through the window toward the parking lot.

"No."

"Good."

He turned back.

"I think she planned this."

Claire spoke from the corner.

"She did."

Everyone looked at her.

Claire was staring at her phone.

"What is it?" I asked.

She turned the screen toward us.

An email.
