Chapter 11 - Claire Owned the School

Daniel stood so quickly his chair struck the wall.
"You own Lily's preschool?"
Claire was not in the room.
She was on her way from Houston, which meant we spent twelve long minutes staring at Marcy as though she had personally invented the fact.
Marcy shook her head.
"I said she controls the foundation."
"Same difference," Daniel snapped.
"No. It isn't."
"It is when my daughter attended a school nobody told me my sister controlled."
Meredith returned before Claire arrived.
When we explained, she did not look shocked.
That worried me.
"You knew?" I asked.
"No. But family foundations are often structured in ways beneficiaries don't understand."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"Apparently my entire family is structured that way."
Claire walked in at 5:26.
She saw our faces and stopped.
"What happened?"
Daniel did not bother easing into it.
"You own Little Oaks."
Claire closed her eyes.
"Marcy told you."
"So it's true."
"I control the foundation that owns the property."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I didn't know Lily attended there until six months ago."
"Six months is still a long time."
"I know."
"Why didn't you tell Emily?"
"Because I was watching Mom."
I stood.
"At my daughter's school?"
Claire looked at me.
"Yes."
Something inside me went very quiet.
"Explain carefully."
She sat down.
"After Dad died, his foundation passed to me because I was the only trustee he trusted."
"Not Daniel?"
"He was still speaking to Mom."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
Claire continued.
"The foundation owned three early-learning centers and two community properties. Dad used them to fund scholarships. Little Oaks is one."
"Why was Marcy hired?"
"Before I became trustee."
"By whom?"
"Mom."
Daniel swore.
I stared at Claire.
"You knew Evelyn had a connection to the school."
"Yes."
"And you let my daughter stay there."
"I didn't choose the school."
"You could have warned me."
"I could have."
"Why didn't you?"
"Because I thought Mom didn't know I knew."
"That is not an answer."
Claire's face changed.
"I was trying to collect evidence."
"Using Lily as bait?"
"No."
"That is what it sounds like."
Daniel stepped between us.
"Emily."
I pointed at him.
"Do not protect her because she's the newest person who makes your mother look worse."
He stopped.
Claire absorbed that.
Then she nodded.
"You're right."
That took some wind out of me.
"I should have warned you. I convinced myself I could monitor Mom without putting Lily at risk. I was wrong."
"How were you monitoring her?"
"Marcy."
Everyone looked at Marcy.
She stared at Claire.
"You said you were protecting the school."
"I was."
"You used me."
Claire's mouth tightened.
"Marcy, my mother was already using you."
"That doesn't make what you did better."
"No."
That was the first time I understood Claire and Evelyn might share one dangerous habit.
Both could justify secrecy if they believed the outcome was righteous.
The difference, maybe, was that Claire could admit it afterward.
Maybe.
Meredith asked, "Did you send the spoofed messages?"
"No."
"Did you send Emily any message today?"
"No."
We showed her.
Claire read them.
Her expression sharpened.
"Evelyn is working for Marcy."
Marcy shouted, "I'm not—"
"I know."
Claire looked at me.
"This isn't accusing Marcy. It's pointing to the organization behind her."
"What organization?"
"Little Oaks."
I felt cold.
"You're saying Evelyn is working for the foundation you control?"
"No. The school is only one subsidiary. The Raymond Carter Children's Foundation is the shell everybody sees."
"What don't we see?"
"A second trust."
Daniel groaned.
"Of course there's another trust."
Claire ignored him.
"Dad created a reserve account for abuse victims. It was private, by design."
"How much?"
"About twelve million now."
I stared.
"Your family has more hidden money than most people have furniture."
Daniel looked embarrassed.
Claire continued.
"That reserve can only be released by unanimous vote of three trustees."
"Who?"
"Me."
She paused.
"Martin Sloane."
Another pause.
"And Evelyn."
Meredith's face changed.
"Why would Raymond leave Evelyn as trustee?"
"He didn't. She inherited the seat from someone else."
"Who?"
"Thomas Mercer Senior."
Pastor Tom's father.
The room was becoming a family tree drawn by a conspiracy theorist.
"Why did Thomas Senior have a seat?" I asked.
"Because he helped Dad set up the fund."
"Was he Daniel's father?"
Claire looked at her brother.
"I don't know."
Daniel sat down heavily.
Meredith asked the useful question.
"What happens if one trustee is removed?"
"The remaining two can appoint a replacement."
"What qualifies removal?"
"Felony conviction, incapacity, or court finding of breach of fiduciary duty."
I understood.
"If Evelyn is arrested, Claire and Sloane choose the replacement."
"Yes."
"And if Claire is discredited?"
"Sloane and Evelyn choose."
Daniel looked at Claire.
"Phase Five."
She nodded.
"Remove Daniel might not mean remove you physically."
"Then what?"
"It might mean remove your standing to challenge the trust."
I asked, "Does Daniel have standing?"
"As Raymond's son, yes."
"Unless he is declared unfit?"
Claire looked at me.
"Or unless his paternity is challenged."
The room fell silent.
Daniel stared at her.
"Say that again."
"Mom told Dad you weren't his biological child."
"You said that was during the divorce."
"Yes."
"Did Dad believe her?"
"No."
"Did he ever test?"
"I don't know."
Meredith leaned back.
"So if Evelyn proves Daniel is not Raymond's son, she could argue he has no beneficiary standing."
Claire nodded.
"Exactly."
"Then why does she need Lily?"
"Because the grandchildren provision defines eligible descendants by legal parentage, not genetics."
I rubbed my temples.
"So Daniel could lose his own share but Lily could still trigger the guardian provision."
"Yes."
"Which gives Evelyn leverage over millions."
"Yes."
Daniel laughed again, but this time there was no humor left.
"Mom built a plan where I lose and she keeps my child."
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I did not answer.
It rang again.
Officer Patel looked at me.
"Put it on speaker."
I answered.
A man's voice.
"Mrs. Carter?"
"Yes."
"My name is Bernard Haskell."
Claire stood.
"What?"
The former psychiatrist.
The man who had helped Evelyn label Claire unstable.
His voice sounded old.
"I understand my name has come up."
I looked at Meredith.
She nodded for me to continue.
"What do you want?"
"To tell you something I should have told Raymond Carter years ago."
"Why now?"
"Because Evelyn called me yesterday."
Every person in the room went still.
"What did she ask?"
"She wanted me to evaluate Daniel."
Daniel stared.
"Why?"
Haskell coughed.
"To establish that he has a hereditary psychiatric disorder."
Claire whispered, "Oh my God."
I asked, "Hereditary from whom?"
Haskell answered.
"From Thomas Mercer Senior."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then Haskell said, "But that's not the important part."
"What is?"
"Evelyn gave me Daniel's DNA test."
Daniel's eyes opened.
"I have never taken a DNA test."
Haskell said quietly, "According to the report, you did."
"When?"
"Thirty-six years ago."
May you like
The room went silent.
"At birth."
