Chapter 9 - Melissa Comes BackMelissa stayed away for almost four years.

Then she emailed Ethan.

I would like to apologize without asking for anything.

He showed Lauren.

“What do you think?”

Lauren shrugged.

“She’s your sister.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It isn’t supposed to be.”

So Ethan met Melissa alone.

Coffee shop.

Public.

She looked different.

No designer bag.

No perfect makeup.

She worked now as an assistant purchasing manager for a regional hotel company.

Normal salary.

Normal apartment.

Normal problems.

“I’m not here to ask you for money.”

“Good start.”

She smiled nervously.

Then:

“I thought Mom’s anger was proof she loved us.”

Ethan listened.

“I thought Lauren made everything harder.”

“She didn’t.”

“I know.”

Melissa cried.

“I knew Noah was sick.”

There it was.

The hardest part.

“I could have taken them.”

“Yes.”

“I didn’t because I was angry Lauren had accused me of using your card.”

“You were using my card.”

“I know.”

She wiped her face.

“I let being embarrassed matter more than my nephew needing help.”

Ethan said nothing.

“I’m sorry.”

He believed her this time.

Then she asked:

“Can I see Noah?”

“No.”

Her face tightened briefly.

Then she nodded.

“Okay.”

That answer mattered.

No argument.

No blood-is-blood speech.

No entitlement.

A year later, Ethan allowed a short supervised meeting.

Lauren agreed.

Noah barely remembered her.

That was perhaps the consequence Melissa had never expected.

Children keep growing while adults waste years believing relationships will wait.
