Chapter 6 - What Lauren Had Never Told MeTwo weeks later, Noah was healthy.

The legal problems were not.

Federal investigators began reviewing the vendor payments because several Cole Development projects involved public infrastructure contracts.

Ethan could lose contracts even if he personally knew nothing.

He expected Lauren to be furious.

Instead she became quiet.

One night he found her sitting on the bedroom floor beside the bed.

“What’s wrong?”

She looked at him.

“I need to tell you something.”

His stomach tightened.

“What?”

“This didn’t start while you were in Denver.”

He sat.

Lauren had endured Patricia’s interference for years.

After Noah was born, it intensified.

Patricia criticized breastfeeding.

Sleep schedules.

Daycare.

Lauren returning to work.

Lauren leaving work.

Everything.

Melissa borrowed clothing without asking.

Used their house while they traveled.

Once hosted a birthday party there.

Ethan remembered.

He had laughed when Lauren complained.

That’s Melissa.

Another phrase that looked uglier now.

Lauren said:

“I stopped telling you.”

“Why?”

“Because every conversation ended with me feeling like I was asking you to choose.”

Ethan looked down.

“I thought I was staying neutral.”

“You weren’t.”

He looked up.

Lauren’s eyes filled.

“When one person keeps crossing boundaries and the other person keeps asking for help, neutrality protects the person crossing them.”

That hurt.

Because it was true.

“Why did you stay?”

Lauren laughed softly.

“Because I love you.”

Then:

“And because you weren’t cruel.”

“You were just trained not to see certain things.”

Ethan cried.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

“No.”

He took her hand.

“I’m sorry I made you prove something had become unbearable before I treated it as real.”

Lauren cried too.

That conversation became the beginning of repairing their marriage.

Not Patricia’s scandal.

Not kicking people out.

That night.

Because Ethan finally stopped framing himself exclusively as the man who came home and rescued his wife.

Lauren did not need a hero.

May you like

She had needed a partner much earlier.

And he had arrived late.
