Chapter 14 - The Girl Without a Crown

The years that followed were not simple.
Getting rid of magical monarchy did not magically make people good.
Politicians still lied.
Nobles still wanted influence.
Merchants still cheated taxes.
Regions still argued.
But now no one could point at a glowing crown and say:
“Obey me because destiny said so.”
A new government formed.
Seven regional Stewards.
An elected First Steward.
Independent courts.
A public treasury.
And a written Charter available to everyone.
Elara returned to school.
At first, nobles complained.
“The former Keeper sitting beside merchants’ children?”
Mara answered:
“Yes.”
Elara studied history.
Law.
Agriculture.
Languages.
And mathematics.
She hated fractions.
Tomas returned to the archives.
He published the true history of Aurelion.
He also wrote about his own mistakes.
One chapter began:
Fear explained why I left my family. It did not erase what my absence did to them.
Elara cried after reading it.
Then corrected his grammar.
Mara expanded her school.
Children of guards, cooks, laundresses, servants, merchants, and nobles studied together.
Cassian remained Regent for several years.
But when asked to become permanent king, he refused.
“I have spent enough of my life preparing to inherit power.”
“What do you want instead?” Elara asked.
“To earn trust.”
He later stood for election as First Steward.
He won.
Varro survived.
He spent years imprisoned.
Near the end of his life, he agreed to testify publicly about the old kings, the Echo, and his own crimes.
Elara attended.
When he saw her, Varro said:
“You could have become the greatest queen Aurelion ever had.”
Elara answered:
“That was never the point.”
“Do you forgive me?”
She considered it.
“No.”
Varro looked down.
Then Elara added:
“But I’m glad you let go.”
That was all.
She did not need forgiveness to become cruelty’s opposite.
At eighteen, Elara faced another question.
Without the crown, without royal inheritance, what would she do?
Her answer shocked almost nobody who knew her.
She ran for office.
Not queen.
Regional Steward.
And for the first time in her life—
the kingdom did not choose Elara through magic.

People had to decide.
