Chapter 12 - The King Who Never Wanted to Be King

The Council finally asked Cassian whether he still wanted the throne.

He requested one night.

The next morning he found Elara sleeping over a map.

“Are you king yet?” she asked.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“I wanted your advice.”

“That sounds dangerous.”

Cassian laughed.

Then became serious.

“All my life people told me I would rule.”

“Did you want to?”

“I never asked myself.”

Elara frowned.

“That sounds terrible.”

“It might be.”

They walked to the Hall of Kings.

The Star Crown waited.

Cassian knelt.

The crown rose.

It floated toward him.

Then stopped.

It moved toward Elara.

Stopped again.

Then divided into two bands of silver light.

One wrapped around Cassian’s wrist.

One around Elara’s.

Words appeared across the floor.

ONE TO GUIDE.

ONE TO GUARD.

NEITHER TO RULE ALONE.

Cassian laughed.

“Apparently we are stuck with each other.”

Elara groaned.

The Council created a new arrangement.

Cassian became First Steward and Regent.

Elara remained Keeper.

At sixteen, Elara could stand for formal Choosing.

If the crown rejected her, she would step aside.

“You’re not worried?” Cassian asked.

“If it chooses somebody else, they can have the meetings.”

Cassian laughed.

Tomas was formally cleared of treason.

He refused a noble title.

“I spent eight years hiding because people cared too much about titles.”

Mara created a school for palace workers’ children.

Rowan rebuilt the Guard.

Dain became an investigator after a public review of his earlier betrayal.

Nobody erased what he had done.

Nobody ignored what he later did either.

Aurelion was learning that accountability and mercy could exist together.

But one mystery remained.

Varro’s body had never been recovered.

And beneath the palace—

May you like

the Vault started whispering again.
