Chapter 6 - The Birth Under a False NameThe baby was born at 9:17 in the morning.

She weighed four pounds and six ounces.
For twelve seconds, she made no sound.
Nathan stood outside the operating room beside Leo, listening to the movement of doctors behind the doors. No one explained what was happening.
Then a thin cry reached the corridor.
Leo grabbed his father’s hand.
“That’s her.”
Nathan could not speak.
Inside, the neonatal team placed the baby beneath warming lights. Mara was conscious but weak after an emergency cesarean section.
“Can I see her?” she asked.
A nurse turned the infant briefly.
The child’s face was small and red, her fists closed tightly beside her cheeks.
Mara began to cry.
“What is her name?” the nurse asked.
Mara looked toward the observation window where Nathan waited.
“No name yet.”
The nurse nodded.
No one would attach an identity before the adults responsible for protecting the child understood what they were doing.
The baby was taken to intensive care.
Ten minutes later, a clerk entered the maternity administration office carrying forms signed by a private physician. The documents named the child Isabelle Celeste Harrow and listed Celeste Monroe Harrow as the mother.
Agent Ortiz was waiting.
The clerk tried to run.
He was arrested before reaching the elevator.
His name was Samuel Pike, a records administrator who had processed false birth certificates for three previous Northlight pregnancies.
The documents contained Eleanor’s old authorization and Nathan’s copied digital signature.
Celeste identified the law firm that prepared them.
In return, prosecutors allowed her to remain in protective custody rather than jail until formal charges were filed.
Mara woke two hours later.
Nathan entered with an independent patient advocate.
“The baby is stable,” he said. “She needs breathing support, but the doctors are optimistic.”
“Has anyone registered her?”
“No.”
Mara closed her eyes with relief.
“I want my name included in every record related to the pregnancy and birth.”
“It will be.”
“I do not know what I want regarding custody.”
“You do not have to decide today.”
“The agency contract says I must surrender her immediately.”
“The contract was obtained through fraud. My attorneys will not enforce it.”
Mara looked at the advocate.
The woman confirmed that separate counsel had already been appointed for Mara.
Nathan added, “The baby will have her own legal representative too.”
Mara studied him.
“Your family enjoys lawyers.”
“We have used them as weapons. This time they should create boundaries.”
Leo entered later with a drawing.
It showed three women surrounding a baby: one with dark hair, one with wings and one holding a stethoscope.
“Who are they?” Mara asked.
“You, my mom Grace, and the doctor who kept the baby alive.”
Nathan looked at the picture.
Celeste was not included.
Neither was Eleanor.
Leo had not drawn his father either.
The child understood that birth did not need a single central hero.
“What should we call her?” Leo asked.
Mara smiled faintly.
“Do you have an idea?”
“Grace?”
Nathan’s chest tightened.
Mara shook her head gently.
“She should not have to carry the entire memory of someone she never met.”
Nathan agreed.
“What about Claire?” Mara suggested. “It means clear.”
Leo considered it.
“Claire Grace Harrow?”
Mara looked toward Nathan.
“Only if Grace’s name is not used to claim that this was what she wanted.”
“It won’t be.”
They chose Claire Grace Quinn-Harrow temporarily, recognizing Mara’s gestational connection and Nathan’s biological parenthood while the court reviewed the case.
The double surname caused an immediate reaction from the Harrow board.
Company counsel argued that the Continuity Trust recognized only descendants carrying the Harrow name.
Nathan ordered them not to file any claim on Claire’s behalf.
“She is a premature newborn,” he said. “Not a shareholder attending her first meeting.”
Meanwhile, investigators examined Blackstone Island.
They found frozen tissue, falsified contracts and records involving seven births. Three gestational carriers had been told the embryos came from anonymous donors. Two were pressured to surrender babies after being declared emotionally unstable.
One woman had disappeared.
Grace’s files suggested that Julian’s network stretched beyond the Harrow family.
Eleanor was arrested on charges related to embryo theft, medical fraud and conspiracy. Because she had confessed and cooperated, she was released under strict conditions while awaiting trial.
She asked to visit Claire.
Nathan said no.
Eleanor did not argue.
Instead, she wrote a letter to Mara.
I have no right to ask to see the child. I am providing a complete list of every decision I authorized. You may use it in court, destroy it or refuse to read it. I will not contact you again unless invited.
Mara read the letter twice.
“She is learning how to sound responsible,” she said.
Nathan did not defend his mother.
“Words are easier than consequences.”
Celeste also requested to see the baby.
Her request was denied.
She sent no letter.
Three days after the birth, Claire’s condition improved. Nathan and Mara visited the neonatal unit separately and sometimes together.
Mara placed one finger inside the incubator. Claire held it.
Nathan stood on the opposite side.
“I thought I could deliver her and leave,” Mara said.
“What do you think now?”
“I think I love her.”
Nathan felt fear, but he did not hide it behind authority.
“I love her too.”
“That makes everything more difficult.”
“Yes.”
Mara wiped her eyes.
“I do not want to take her from her brother.”
“And I do not want to take her from the only person whose heartbeat she has known.”
They agreed to delay permanent custody decisions until Mara recovered and specialists could evaluate every option.
The family press office demanded a statement. Rumors spread that Nathan’s secret child had been born through an illegal surrogate arrangement.
Nathan refused to present Claire publicly.
He released only one sentence:
A child was born after serious violations of consent. Her health and the rights of every woman involved matter more than corporate speculation.
The stock price fell.
Several directors blamed him.
Nathan did not change the statement.
That night, Agent Ortiz arrived with new evidence.
Julian’s car had been found near the ferry terminal. Investigators originally believed he was in federal custody after the arrest at Blackstone.
The man arrested there was not Julian.
He was a security contractor wearing facial prosthetics and carrying Julian’s identification.
The real Julian had escaped through an underwater maintenance tunnel before the raid.
He had activated the Grace Protocol remotely and remained free.
Security footage showed him entering Boston under another name.
His final phone signal came from a building across the street from the neonatal hospital.
Nathan looked through the window.
A dark figure stood on the roof opposite them.
Before security could respond, the figure disappeared.

A message arrived on Nathan’s phone:
You froze the trust. Bring it back, or Claire will never leave the hospital.
