Chapter 6 - Husband and Wife

Adrian guided them through an old maintenance tunnel.
Thomas remained with medical staff behind a reinforced door.
Daniel and Emilia moved through darkness.
—Stay behind me.
Emilia almost laughed.
—You keep saying things like we’re a normal married couple.
Daniel glanced back.
“Normal married couples probably don’t spend their second day escaping through medical tunnels.”
—You promised a luxurious life.
—Technically the tunnel is privately owned.
Despite everything, she laughed.
Daniel looked surprised.
It was the first time he had heard it since their wedding.
They reached an underground parking area.
Adrian waited beside a black vehicle.
Daniel stopped.
The brothers stared at one another.
Twelve years.
Adrian was fifty.
Silver threaded through his hair.
A thin scar crossed his forehead.
—Little brother.
Daniel punched him.
Adrian fell against the car.
Emilia gasped.
Adrian touched his bleeding lip.
Then nodded.
“I deserved that.”
Daniel grabbed his coat.
“Did you try to kill me?”
“No.”
“Did you steal from the company?”
“Yes.”
“At least you admit something.”
Adrian pushed him away.
“I committed crimes. Dad committed crimes. Marcus committed worse ones.”
—And Sarah Klein?
Adrian stopped.
Daniel’s voice broke.
“She was our accountant. She died.”
Adrian lowered his eyes.
“I didn’t kill her.”
“But you knew she was in danger.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked ready to strike again.
Emilia stepped between them.
—Stop.
Both stared at her.
—You can decide which brother deserves which punch after we survive.
Adrian almost smiled.
“I like her.”
Daniel glared.
—Don’t.
They drove to an abandoned shipping office.
Adrian had accumulated evidence for years.
Documents showed Marcus laundering money through companies on both sides.
Whenever investigators approached, he fed each brother enough information to blame the other.
—Why didn’t you contact Daniel?
Emilia asked.
Adrian looked ashamed.
“Because I had done enough myself to believe Daniel would hand me to prosecutors.”
—Would you?
Emilia asked Daniel.
“Yes.”
Adrian shrugged.
“See?”
“But I would have listened first.”
That silenced him.
The pendant contained the final authentication key.
Combined with Adrian’s records and Daniel’s company archive, it could unlock the entire history.
Names.
Payments.
Bribery.
Deaths.
Enough to destroy Marcus.
Also enough to expose the Beaumont family.
Daniel understood.
If released, his father’s reputation would collapse.
The company might lose billions.
His own position could disappear.
Emilia watched him.
—What are you going to do?
Daniel looked at the data.
Then said:
“Release it.”
Adrian stared.
“All of it?”
“All crimes.”
“You’ll destroy Father’s legacy.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Good.”
There was no hesitation.
Emilia saw something change inside him.
For twelve years he had hidden his face to preserve himself.
Now he was willing to destroy the lie preserving his family name.
Adrian contacted a federal prosecutor he trusted.
Copies would be transmitted simultaneously to authorities and several journalists.
But Marcus had one final advantage.
He still controlled Beaumont security.
And he knew where Emilia’s family was.
Her phone rang.
Marcus.
She answered.
“Emilia.”
—What?
“Your father has been moved.”
Her face went white.
Daniel grabbed the phone.
—Where?
Marcus laughed.
“To your mansion.”
Daniel became still.
Marcus continued.
“Come home, husband and wife.”
May you like
A pause.
“Bring the pendant.”
