Chapter 4 - The House Beneath the Ashes

The drive took nearly three hours.
Daniel did not explain their destination.
They left the highway, crossed a forest road and finally stopped before an iron gate covered in ivy.
Beyond it stood a stone house.
Old.
Dark.
Partially hidden by trees.
Emilia recognized it.
She had seen photographs online.
—This is the house from the fire.
—What remains of it.
The front wing had been restored secretly years earlier.
Daniel entered a code.
Heavy locks released.
Inside was nothing like the abandoned ruin people believed existed.
Security monitors.
Computers.
Locked cabinets.
An underground archive.
—You built all this?
—My father did.
Daniel removed the prosthetic.
Emilia still found the transformation unsettling.
Not because his real face frightened her.
Because it reminded her how little she knew.
—How many people know?
—Five.
—Now six.
—Yes.
A woman entered from another room.
Silver hair.
Straight posture.
Perhaps sixty.
Daniel introduced her.
—Dr. Evelyn Ross.
Emilia stared.
The name was familiar.
—You were Jonathan Beaumont’s attorney.
Evelyn smiled faintly.
—And Daniel’s godmother.
She hugged Daniel.
Then looked at Emilia.
—So you are the woman who finally convinced this stubborn man to get married.
Emilia almost laughed.
—“Convinced” is generous.
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
Evelyn noticed.
—Ah.
She glanced between them.
“This really was a contract.”
—Yes —Emilia said.
Evelyn shook her head at Daniel.
—Your father would haunt you if he could.
“He tried while alive.”
They entered the archive.
Daniel explained the true purpose of Jonathan Beaumont’s marriage condition.
It was not about romance.
His father believed Adrian would eventually return for control of the foundation.
The trust structure required Daniel to establish a legally separate family line before receiving certain voting rights.
—Your father turned marriage into corporate security?
Emilia asked.
Daniel sighed.
—He was complicated.
Evelyn added:
“He was terrified Adrian would kill Daniel before control transferred.”
Emilia looked around.
—And now Adrian has the music box.
Daniel nodded.
“Possibly the encryption key.”
—What happens if he opens it?
—We don’t know exactly what Thomas stored.
Evelyn pulled up old records.
Jonathan and Thomas had divided the evidence into pieces.
One archive contained transaction records.
Another contained names.
A third contained authentication keys.
The music box could contain only one component.
—So he may not have everything.
—Correct.
Daniel’s phone rang.
Private number.
This time he answered.
—Adrian.
A man laughed.
The voice was smooth.
—Still quick.
Emilia watched Daniel change.
He became colder.
—You involved her family.
—Her father involved himself.
—You poisoned him?
Emilia’s breath caught.
Adrian laughed again.
“No. Thomas’s heart has always been weak. I simply gave him a reason to hurry.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
—What do you want?
—What I’ve always wanted.
—The company?
—No.
Pause.
“The truth buried.”
Adrian explained that Daniel misunderstood everything.
Their father had not discovered a criminal empire.
He had created part of it.
Jonathan Beaumont had used illegal shipping arrangements for years.
When Adrian tried to expose him, Jonathan chose Daniel as the “good son” and rewrote the story.
Daniel stared.
—You’re lying.
“Ask Evelyn.”
Daniel looked at his godmother.
And saw her face.
That was enough.
—Evelyn?
She closed her eyes.
Adrian laughed through the phone.
“There it is.”
Daniel stepped toward her.
“What is he talking about?”
Evelyn whispered:
“Your father was not innocent.”
The room became silent.
She explained.
Jonathan began the illicit network.
Adrian expanded it.
Then father and son turned against one another.
Daniel had discovered only part of the accounts.
Jonathan planned to expose Adrian while hiding his own crimes.
The fire happened before he could.
—Who started the fire? —Daniel asked.
Evelyn looked at him.
“I never knew.”
Adrian spoke through the phone.
“I do.”
Daniel raised the phone.
“Then say it.”
A pause.
“I didn’t start it.”
Daniel said nothing.
Adrian continued.
“Your father did.”
Emilia stared.
Daniel’s face emptied.
“That’s impossible.”
“He was going to burn the records and disappear.”
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To stop him.”
Daniel’s breathing became shallow.
Adrian added:
“But someone else arrived first.”
—Who?
Adrian did not answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Ask your new wife why her father was at the Beaumont house the night it burned.”
The call ended.
Every eye turned toward Emilia.
She whispered:
“My father?”
May you like
Daniel stared at her.
And for the first time since their wedding, Emilia saw genuine fear in his eyes.
