Chapter 9 - THE HEIR NO ONE KNEW

I spent the entire night digging. Elias joined me. We pulled birth records. Old hospital files. Family trees. We traced every lead Julian had left behind. And by dawn, we found it. Buried in a small parish registry, sealed away fifty years ago.

Julian had married young. He had a son. Born under a different name. Adopted out at birth, officially dead to the world—but alive. Raised in silence. Educated in secret. Prepared to one day step forward and claim everything.

Julian called him his true heir.

And his name… was Elias Vance.

I stared at the page. Beside me, Elias went still.

“That is my name,” he said quietly.

I looked up at him. “Your mother died shortly after you were born. You told me you had no family.”

“I was told I was an orphan,” Elias said. His voice was tight. “Adopted by a kind couple who died when I was eighteen. I never knew my biological father.”

“Julian left you everything,” I said. “In a sealed codicil dated three days before he died. Everything he owned. His fortune. His properties. His claims.”

Elias leaned forward, reading the documents one by one. Slowly, the color drained from his face.

“He groomed me,” Elias whispered. “Got me into law school. Paid my tuition. Arranged for me to meet you. All part of his plan. I was never just your lawyer, Adrian. I was his backup plan. If Vivienne failed… I was supposed to step forward. Claim Leo. Or replace him.”

Horror washed over me. Elias had stood beside me through everything. He had helped me find the letter. He had helped me expose Julian. He had risked so much.

“Did you know?” I asked.

Elias looked at me, eyes steady and terrified.

“I swear to you—I never knew. I suspected Julian had taken an interest in me. But I never knew he was my father. I never knew what he planned. If I had…”

He did not finish. He did not need to.

I looked at the documents. At the dates. At how perfectly Elias had been positioned all along. Julian had built his succession plan with terrifying care. Elara murdered. Vivienne planted. Elias prepared. And Leo—either turned into a tool or removed entirely.

And then Julian died suddenly. Before he could give Elias his final instructions. Before he could explain everything. Which meant… Elias had walked into this blind. And by the time he found out… he had already come to respect me. To care for Leo. To hate the father he never knew.

“What do we do?” Elias asked quietly.

I thought of Julian’s will. Of the fortune. Of the claims. If Elias accepted them, he became one of the wealthiest men in the country. If he rejected them… Julian’s estate would be split among distant relatives. And the secrets would remain buried.

“Burn them,” I said.

Elias stared.

“Every document that names you as his heir,” I said. “Every claim. Every birth record he prepared. Burn them. Julian spent fifty years building an empire on lies and murder. We will not let his blood inherit anything. Especially not his hatred.”

Elias exhaled a long, shaking breath. He gathered the papers slowly.

“And if someone comes looking?”

“Let them come,” I said. “Julian is dead. Vivienne is gone. You are free. You choose who you are, Elias. Not him.”

Elias looked down at Leo’s photograph on my desk. Then back at me.

“I choose to be your lawyer,” he said quietly. “And your friend. Whatever comes. I stand with you. And with him.”

He carried Julian’s inheritance to the fireplace and set a match to it. We stood together and watched the last of his ambition turn to ash.
