Chapter 6 - THE PACKAGE FROM THE DEAD

Dawn broke gray and heavy. I sat in the study, watching the street, Leo asleep upstairs in Marta’s care. Elias stood beside me. We had alerted the police, but Julian’s lawyer insisted the package be delivered privately first. It was sealed, legal, and bound by his last instructions.

At nine sharp, a car pulled up. A man in a dark suit climbed out, carried a sealed envelope and a thick bound folder up the steps, and handed them to me without a word.

I carried them to the desk. My hands did not shake. I had run out of fear. There was only cold, clear purpose now.

I broke the seal.

The first page was a letter from Julian Hale to Vivienne. Dated the day before he died.

*My dear Vivienne,*

*If you are reading this, you failed. You let the boy live. And so I must give you what I promised never to reveal. Elara did not just carry a disorder. She knew exactly what it did. She knew it would pass to her children. And she carried it deliberately anyway. She gambled with their lives to keep Adrian’s fortune. If you cannot destroy the boy… then use what is enclosed. Ruin Elara. Ruin Adrian. Make certain no one of their blood ever holds power again. Burn the letter you found. Burn the charm. And never speak my name to anyone. You were paid to do one job. Finish it.*

I set the letter aside.

The folder contained medical records. Old family letters. Death certificates. Handwritten notes. All claiming Elara knew everything and hid it. All designed to paint her as greedy, reckless, and dangerous.

And at the very back… one final document.

A will fragment. Handwritten. In Julian’s hand. Dated two weeks before Elara died.

*If Elara speaks to Adrian. If she tells him about the family. If she exposes us… she dies. The car will be an accident. Rain makes everything look like an accident. And then we take the child. We raise him properly. He will be ours. And Adrian will never know the truth.*

The words blurred.

Julian had written it. He had planned it all. Murder Elara. Take Leo. Raise him as his own heir. And then Vivienne had entered the picture—married me, and Julian realized he could control her too.

He never intended to let Leo live. He intended to take him eventually. Vivienne was supposed to soften me up, make me doubt myself, and then—when the moment was right—Julian would have stepped forward and claimed Leo by force.

But Julian died. And so the job fell to Vivienne. And she, in her warped, manipulated way, decided drowning Leo was mercy rather than murder.

I looked up at Elias.

“He wrote it all down,” I said. “Confessed. In his own hand.”

Elias exhaled slowly. “It proves Elara was murdered. It clears Leo. It clears Elara. And it destroys every lie Vivienne ever told.”

“Where does that leave her?” I asked.

Elias hesitated. “She was manipulated, Adrian. Threatened. Paid. Julian held her family’s debts over her head. She believed every word he said. She truly thought she was protecting you from a tragedy.”

“She tried to kill my son,” I said. “Because a monster told her it was the right thing to do. That does not make it less terrible.”

“No,” Elias agreed. “But it makes it understandable. Perhaps even forgivable—if she testifies to everything she knows.”

I looked down at the will fragment. Julian’s handwriting. His plan. All of it exposed at last. Elara had been murdered. She had been trying to protect us. And Vivienne—poor, foolish, manipulated Vivienne—had been the final tool in a dead man’s plot.

I walked to the window. The sun broke through the clouds at last.

“Bring her in,” I said. “Let her read this. Let her read the part where the man she obeyed planned to kill Elara and steal Leo from the moment he was born. Let her see exactly who she served.”
