Chapter 4 - The Retaliation

Julian Vane was a corporate predator, but cornered predators do not surrender gracefully; they strike back with desperate, clumsy ferocity. He knew that if he backed down, his aura of invincibility in Chicago’s elite financial circles would crumble instantly. Instead of withdrawing his bid for St. Jude’s, Julian made the catastrophic mistake of assuming he could eliminate his problem by striking at my weakness.
Two days after our confrontation at the Obsidian Club, the medical team at St. Jude’s initiated the first critical phase of Keo’s gene therapy. The boy was isolated in a sterile room, his body fighting through the intense conditioning protocol. Linda spent every waking hour sitting behind the glass partition, speaking to him through an intercom, keeping his spirits high with tireless devotion.
It was 2:00 AM when my phone rang. It was Viktor, guarding the hospital floor.
“Boss,” Viktor’s voice was tense, punctuated by the heavy, rhythmic sound of running footsteps and distant alarms echoing over the receiver. “We’ve got a situation on the 9th floor. Three men dressed as night maintenance staff tried to breach the isolation ward. They were carrying contaminated liquid containers—they were trying to ruin the sterile environment and destroy the bio-refrigeration units holding Keo’s tailored cell treatments.”
A cold, terrifying rage surged through my veins, hot as liquid iron.
“Status?” I demanded, already pulling on my coat and striding out of my penthouse bedroom.
“Frank and I neutralized two of them in the hallway,” Viktor reported. “The third tried to pull a suppressed weapon. Frank put him down. The boy and Linda are safe inside the secured inner room—they never got past us. But these weren't standard gang hitmen. They were professional mercenaries.”
“Hold the perimeter,” I ordered. “I’m on my way with six men. No one leaves that floor alive if they aren't wearing my badge.”
Ten minutes later, my black armored SUV screeched to a halt in the ambulance bay of St. Jude’s. I took the private express elevator straight to the ninth floor. The corridor was locked down. Two mercenary bodies lay disarmed and zip-tied against the wall, guarded by Frank, while hospital security stood trembling in the corner under Marco’s watchful eye.
I walked straight past the commotion into the observation room. Linda was sitting on the floor, hugging her knees against the glass, shaking violently. Keo was sleeping soundly inside his sterile chamber, completely unaware that heavily armed men had just fought for his life ten feet away.
When Linda saw me, she scrambled to her feet. She didn't look scared of me anymore; she looked terrified for her child.
“Mr. Gallo... they tried to destroy his medicine,” she sobbed, her voice raw and breaking. “They were going to kill my baby just to hurt you! Why would anyone do this? He’s just a little boy!”
I stepped close to her, wrapping a steadying hand around her cold shoulder. I looked into her tear-streaked face with absolute, unwavering resolve.
“Listen to me, Linda,” I said, my voice quiet, deep, and steady as mountain stone. “They didn't do this to hurt me. They did this because they are weak, cowardly men who think they can scare us. But as long as I am breathing, no harm will come to Keo. Do you hear me? I will burn this entire city to ash before I let anyone touch a single drop of his medicine.”
She looked up into my eyes, searching for reassurance, and found no hesitation—only absolute protection. She nodded slowly, leaning her forehead against my chest for a brief second as her body surrendered its fear to my strength.
“Marco,” I called out over my shoulder without taking my eyes off the glass partition.
“Yes, Boss?” Marco stepped up beside me.
“Who sent the mercenaries?”
“Marcus Vane,” Marco said quietly. “Julian’s brother. He used an off-grid private security firm based out of Indiana. They wanted to destroy the therapy batch and frame it as an accidental refrigeration failure, killing the boy quietly and ruining the trial’s reputation.”
I turned around slowly. My face was a mask of smooth, calm, terrifying stillness.
“Julian and Marcus Vane have forgotten what kind of man I am,” I said quietly. “They think because I wear tailored suits and invest in real estate, I have forgotten how to hunt.”
“What are your orders, Boss?” Marco asked, his eyes glinting with ruthless anticipation.
“Transfer Keo and Linda to the private medical bunker at my estate immediately under heavy escort,” I commanded. “Bring Dr. Harrison and his entire specialized nursing team with them. I have a fully equipped medical facility beneath the north wing that has never been used.”

“And the Vane family?”
“Assemble the full security council,” I said softly. “Tonight, we dismantle Vane Holdings piece by piece. By sunrise, Marcus Vane will be in cuffs, and Julian Vane will be begging me for mercy on his knees.”
