Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Two years later, on a breathtaking summer morning, the grand chapel on the hill overlooking the Gallo Estate was adorned with white roses and golden sunlight. The bells chimed softly across the valley, announcing a day of absolute celebration and eternal union.
I stood at the altar wearing a tailored charcoal tuxedo, waiting for the woman who had redefined my entire existence. Beside me as my best man stood Marco, looking sharp and proud. The pews were filled with friends, doctors, estate staff, and city figures who had witnessed the extraordinary journey of our lives over the past three years.
The heavy oak doors of the chapel swung open, and the organ swelled into a triumphant wedding march.
Keo, now a healthy, handsome ten-year-old boy dressed in a suit matching mine, walked down the aisle carrying the ring velvet pillow, his head held high and a bright, joyful smile on his face. Behind him walked Linda, escorted down the aisle by Dr. Harrison, who had become a beloved grandfather figure to our family.
Linda was breathtaking. Her white lace wedding gown flowed around her like a dream; her dark hair was pinned gracefully with delicate pearl pins, and her face beamed with pure, radiant love. As she reached the altar, Dr. Harrison placed her hand gently in mine, nodding warmly before taking his seat.
I took Linda’s soft hands in mine, looking deep into her beautiful eyes.
“Vincent,” she whispered softly, her hands warm and steady in mine.
“Linda,” I replied, my voice full of devotion.
The priest spoke sacred words of union, love, and commitment, but to us, our vows had already been written in the blood, tears, and fierce loyalty of the past three years. When the priest pronounced us husband and wife, I took Linda in my arms and kissed her deeply, surrounded by the joyous cheers and applause of everyone who loved us.
Keo ran up to us, hugging both of our waists tightly. I reached down, scooping him up into my arm while holding my wife with the other, bringing our family together in one complete, unbreakable embrace.
“Are you officially my dad now, Mr. Vincent?” Keo asked excitedly, his arm wrapped around my neck.
“I have been your dad since the day I met you, Keo,” I said softly, kissing his forehead as he beamed with absolute joy.
Later that evening, as the sun set in brilliant shades of gold, crimson, and purple over the rolling hills of our estate, Linda and I walked out onto the high stone balcony off our master suite. Below us, the estate was peaceful, lit by soft garden lanterns. In the distance, Chicago’s skyline sparkled against the twilight sky—a city that was now safer, kinder, and forever changed by what had begun in a quiet hospital room.
Linda leaned back against my chest, wrapping her arms over mine as I held her close from behind, resting my chin gently on her head.
“Did you ever imagine your life would look like this, Vincent?” she asked softly, watching the stars begin to appear in the darkening sky.
I looked out over my land, feeling the deep, unbreakable peace that filled every corner of my soul. I remembered the man I used to be—a cold, cautious shadow who noticed everything out of fear of betrayal, who ruled through intimidation and isolation.
“No,” I said softly, pressing a gentle kiss to her neck. “I spent my whole life watching for enemies in the dark. I thought noticing details was just a tool to survive. But following you through the rain that afternoon taught me the truth.”
“What truth?” she asked gently, turning her head to look up into my eyes.
“That the best thing a powerful man can ever notice,” I said softly, holding her close as the cool night breeze wrapped around us, “is a chance to love, protect, and give someone a second chance at life.”
May you like
She smiled, leaning up to kiss my lips gently under the starlit sky.
And there, high above the quiet grounds of our home, surrounded by love, life, and an unshakeable legacy of hope, the shadow finally found its light.
