Chapter 8 - A New Chapter

Six months later.
The Cray estate had undergone a complete transformation. The cold, tense atmosphere that once dominated the mansion had vanished, replaced by an open, lively energy. The high security remained, but the staff worked with genuine smiles, and the dark rumors that once haunted the halls were replaced by stories of Dominic’s complete legal exoneration and legitimate business restructuring.
Dominic had successfully transitioned his family’s logistics and shipping operations into a fully legal, high-revenue commercial enterprise. With Julian Vance and Victor Strand serving federal prison sentences, peace had returned to the city.
It was a sunny Saturday afternoon. I sat at a white wrought-iron table on the newly renovated sun deck overlooking the gardens, reviewing the scheduling logistics for the estate's upcoming charity auction.
I wore a comfortable cream-colored silk blouse and slacks—a far cry from the uniform I used to wear.
Down on the grass, Dominic was running around with Marcus, teaching him how to throw a small football. The sight of the former feared syndicate leader laughing freely in a casual t-shirt while chasing a three-year-old toddler was something no one in this city would have believed a year ago.
"Catch it, Marcus!" Dominic called out, gently tossing the ball.
Marcus caught it against his chest with a triumphant giggle. "I got it, Dominic!"
Dominic walked over to my table, wiping his brow with a towel, a warm smile on his face. He pulled out a chair beside me and sat down.
"He’s getting fast," Dominic noted, looking out at Marcus, who was now chasing a butterfly near the flower beds.
"He adores you," I said softly, setting my pen down. "Every morning he asks if 'Mr. Dominic' is eating breakfast with us."
Dominic looked at me, his gaze lingering on my eyes. Over the past six months, our relationship had grown far beyond professional boundaries. The quiet evenings spent talking in the library, the shared meals, and the mutual respect had built a deep, unspoken bond between us.

"Elena," Dominic said, his voice lowering into a gentle cadence. He reached across the table, taking my hand in his. "There's something I've been wanting to ask you."
My heart fluttered nervously, but a soft smile touched my lips. "What is it?"
