Chapter 4 - Shadows and Secrets

The weeks that followed were a surreal nightmare wrapped in luxury.
Clara was confined to the Rossi estate, surrounded by high walls, security cameras, and armed men in black suits who bowed their heads whenever she passed. Isabella spent hours with her every day, helping her do physical therapy, bringing her tea, and treating her with a motherly devotion that left Clara deeply touched—and thoroughly confused.
Yet Dominic remained an enigma. He was a shadow that visited her late at night, standing in the doorway of her room to check if she was sleeping, barely speaking a word before vanishing back into his violent, invisible empire.
One evening, unable to sleep from the lingering pain in her shoulder, Clara wandered down into Dominic’s private study.
The door was unlocked. The room smelled of old leather, expensive bourbon, and tobacco. Guided by a strange compulsion, Clara walked over to the heavy mahogany desk. Folders were stacked neatly beside a brass lamp.
One folder caught her eye. It had her photo attached to the top corner—a grainy picture from her diner ID.
She opened it.
Inside were birth certificates, medical records, and old, yellowed newspaper clippings from twenty years ago. Headlines blared: ELENA MORETTI FOUND DEAD IN BROOKLYN. Attached was a DNA analysis report comparing Clara’s blood from the hospital to a cold-case profile.
Match Confirmed: Biological Daughter of Elena Moretti.
Below it was a handwritten note in Dominic’s sharp script: The ledgers exist. Clara is the key. Keep her contained.
Clara’s hand began to shake. The room felt like it was spinning.
She wasn't saved out of gratitude. She wasn't married out of honor.
She was a piece on a chessboard. A key to a mob war.

"You shouldn't be in here."
Clara whirled around. Dominic stood in the doorway, his silhouette framed by the dim light of the hallway.
