Chapter 3 - The Mother

Evelyn Vale arrived at the security room wearing pearls and outrage.

“This is absurd.”

Detective Brooks placed the waiver in front of her.

“Your name appears as successor beneficiary.”

“I didn’t prepare that.”

“Did you know about it?”

“No.”

Maya watched her.

Evelyn had never liked her.

Too ordinary.

Too quiet.

Too unimpressed by the Vale name.

But dislike was not proof.

Nathan asked:

“Mom, did Victoria ever discuss Maya’s trust rights with you?”

Evelyn hesitated.

Only a second.

“Yes.”

Maya’s chest tightened.

“How often?”

“Once or twice.”

Nathan stared.

“About what?”

“She said Maya might leave.”

“I never said that,” Maya replied.

Evelyn looked at her.

“I didn’t know what to believe.”

There it was.

The family’s favorite sentence.

I didn’t know what to believe.

A polite way to say nobody had bothered to check.

Detective Brooks asked:

“Did Victoria suggest you would receive control if Maya signed?”

Evelyn looked away.

“She said the estate would be safer.”

Nathan laughed once.

Cold.

“Safer from my wife?”

“She said Maya was reckless.”

“With what?”

“Money.”

Maya almost smiled.

She had spent six years managing nonprofit budgets.

Victoria had never balanced a checking account without an assistant.

But rumor did not require logic.

Then Brooks asked for Evelyn’s phone.

She resisted.

Then gave it over.

The messages were bad.

Victoria:

Maya is unstable again.

Evelyn:

Nathan will protect her.

Victoria:

Only until he sees what she really is.

Another:

We need documentation.

Evelyn:

Do not do anything illegal.

Victoria:

Of course not.

That line did not save her.

Then another thread.

Evelyn:

If Maya gives up the trust benefit, what happens?

Victoria:

It returns to the Vale family line.

Evelyn:

Meaning?

Victoria:

You become primary family beneficiary until Nathan names someone else.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Nathan stared at his mother.

“You knew you would benefit.”

“I knew what she claimed.”

“And you never told me?”

“I thought it was hypothetical.”

Maya said:

“Nothing felt hypothetical from the floor.”

Evelyn flinched.

Good.

Then Detective Brooks asked:

“Mrs. Vale, did you authorize Victoria to access the estate documents?”

“No.”

Nathan looked at his mother.

“Who did?”

Evelyn said:

“I don’t know.”

The answer came from Caleb.

“Grandfather’s office.”

Everyone turned.

Caleb looked terrified.

“I saw Victoria meeting with Mr. Foster.”

Nathan’s late father’s estate attorney.

George Foster.

Retired.

Trusted.

He had drafted the family trust.

Nathan said:

“When?”

“Three times.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Caleb looked down.

“Victoria said it was about tax planning.”

Detective Brooks asked:

“Where is Foster now?”

Caleb swallowed.

“He was here tonight.”

Nathan stood.

“What?”

“He left before you came in from the pool.”

Security checked the gates.

Foster’s car was gone.

Then one guard entered.

“Sir, we found something in the west office.”

A shredder bag.

Fresh.

Inside were torn pages from the Vale family trust.

One line remained readable.

IF MAYA VALE DISCLAIMS SPOUSAL BENEFITS…

Nathan looked at Brooks.

“This wasn’t Victoria improvising.”

Brooks nodded.

“No.”

May you like

Then:

“Someone built the paperwork for her.”
