Chapter 1 - The Bracelet

Victoria’s gold stiletto came down on Maya’s wrist before anyone in the room understood what was happening.
Maya cried out.
The white tile beneath her cheek felt like ice.
Her grandmother’s bracelet lay trapped beneath Victoria’s heel, its heavy gold links bending with a soft metallic crack.
“Please,” Maya gasped. “Get off me.”
Victoria leaned down.
Dark red dress.
Perfect hair.
A smile without warmth.
“You don’t belong in this house.”
She pressed harder.
Maya’s fingers went numb.
For three months, Victoria had been telling the family the same story.
Maya was unstable.
Maya stole jewelry.
Maya lied about money.
Maya wanted Nathan’s inheritance.
Maya was destroying the family.
Tonight, the story was supposed to become permanent.
On the coffee table sat a folder.
LEGAL WAIVER.
Maya had refused to sign it.
That was why she was on the floor.
“Give up your rights,” Victoria whispered, “and I’ll let you leave with dignity.”
Maya almost laughed.
Dignity?
Her wrist was under a shoe.
Her grandmother’s bracelet was being crushed.
Two maids stood frozen near the hallway.
Nathan’s aunt stared at the floor.
His cousin whispered:
“Victoria, stop.”
Victoria ignored him.
Then the glass doors to the pool swung open.
Nathan Vale walked in.
He stopped.
His face changed.
“Maya?”
Victoria’s heel lifted instantly.
Too late.
The dome camera above the ceiling had already captured everything.
Nathan crossed the room.
“What the hell are you doing?”
Victoria raised both hands.
“She attacked me.”
Maya pushed herself up on one elbow.
“No.”
Victoria pointed.
“She threw the bracelet at me.”
Nathan looked at the broken gold links.
Then at Maya’s wrist.
A dark red mark was already forming.
Maya whispered:
“She made me kneel.”
Victoria snapped:
“She is lying.”
Nathan moved so quickly Victoria barely had time to step back.
He grabbed the front straps of her dress and shoved her away from Maya.
Victoria stumbled through the open doors and fell into the pool.
The splash shocked everyone.
Nathan dropped beside Maya.
“Look at me.”
She did.
Barely.
“Can you move your hand?”
“A little.”
He lifted her carefully.
Then the estate security alarm chimed.
One of the guards entered.
“Mr. Vale, the interior system triggered a physical-distress alert.”
Victoria surfaced in the pool, screaming.
Nathan did not even turn.
“Pull every camera feed from the last hour.”
Victoria froze.
The guard nodded.
Then Maya looked toward the legal waiver.
“Nathan.”
“What?”
“That paper.”
He followed her eyes.
Victoria climbed out of the pool.
“No.”
Her voice cracked.
Nathan picked up the folder.
The first page read:
VOLUNTARY RELINQUISHMENT OF MARITAL AND TRUST BENEFITS.
His eyes narrowed.
Then he saw the signature line.
MAYA VALE.
Already signed.
Maya stared at it.
“I never signed that.”
Victoria’s face went white.
May you like
And the security guard said:
“Sir… you should see what the camera recorded before Mrs. Vale came downstairs.”
