Chapter 9 - The Woman Who Refused to Stay Broken
A year passed.
Helena recovered physically.
The emotional scars took longer.
But slowly, she rebuilt her life.
She joined a community support group.
She began volunteering at a domestic-violence prevention center.
She started painting again.
Clara visited every Sunday.
One afternoon, Helena showed her a painting.
It depicted a woman standing beneath heavy rain.
Behind her was a broken house.
Ahead was sunlight.
Clara smiled.
“You painted yourself.”
Helena nodded.
“I think so.”
“It's beautiful.”
“I used to think surviving meant going back to who I was.”
She looked at the painting.
“Now I think surviving means becoming someone new.”
Clara hugged her.
“I like the new you.”
