Chapter 7 - The Family Breaks Apart

The investigation destroyed the family's carefully constructed image.
Arthur moved out.
Brooke's social circle disappeared.
Landry was suspended pending review.
Two officers were reassigned.
Westbridge Police Department opened an internal audit.
And Helena returned home.
But she was different.
She startled whenever someone raised their voice.
She avoided crowded rooms.
She slept with the bedroom door locked.
Clara noticed.
“Mom.”
“I’m fine.”
“No, you're not.”
Helena looked away.
“I don't want to be weak.”
Clara sat beside her.
“You survived.”
“That's different.”
“No.”
Clara took her hand.
“Survival is strength.”
Helena began crying.
For years, she had been the person everyone expected to forgive.
The mother.
The peacemaker.
The one who kept family gatherings comfortable.
But that night had changed something.
She no longer wanted comfort.
She wanted boundaries.
“I should have left years ago,” Helena whispered.
“Why didn't you?”
“Because I thought keeping the family together mattered.”
Clara looked at her.
“Family isn't supposed to require you to disappear.”
Helena finally smiled.
“I raised a lawyer.”
May you like
“You raised someone stubborn.”
“Same thing.”
