Chapter 15 - What My Father Left Me

Years after the trials ended, I read my father’s final letter again.
I had once believed his greatest gift was the protected trust and the evidence exposing Celia.
I was wrong.
Near the end, he wrote:
If you inherit the company, do not turn it into a throne. A business can feed thousands of families or one man’s pride. The difference is whether the people inside it are allowed to speak without fear.
My father had discovered that lesson too late to save himself.
I had nearly discovered it too late to save my marriage.
The Mercer family empire survived, but the dynasty did not.
Sophie would inherit assets one day, but she would not inherit an executive title automatically. She could work for the company only if she wanted to and qualified. The family trust funded education, healthcare, charitable work, and employee ownership rather than private luxury alone.
When reporters asked whether I had forgiven my siblings, I gave different answers.
Grant and I communicated through attorneys for years. Eventually, we exchanged occasional letters. He accepted that we might never become close.
Vanessa completed restitution and began working outside the luxury-events industry. She wrote Leah an apology that did not request reconciliation. Leah chose not to respond.
